Basketball talk in the summer? Well, things never change on the UK campus.
Earlier this month the University of Kentucky's schedule was released. On it featured familiar SEC foes and a couple of non conference rivals. However, many new faces appear on the 1986-87 Wildcat slate.
The old: road adventures to Bloomington (Dec. 6) and Louisville (Dec. 27) await Eddie Sutton's ballclub next season. Also the 'Cats will battle the always tough 18-game SEC round-robin adventure.
The new: Austin Peay (Nov. 29), Texas Tech (Dec 2), Lamar (Dec. 13) and Navy (Jan. 25) will come to Rupp Arena for their initial visits.
'This is a very attractive schedule for our fans," athletics director Cliff Hagan said as the schedule was released on June 5th. "Our December schedule is a tough one that should get our team ready for the SEC round-robin.
"We're excited about hosting Navy and David Robinson on Super Bowl Sunday and the game on March 1 will be a strong in-tersectional game with a lot of appeal."
So far Kentucky hasn't found an opponent for the March 1 game which is scheduled to be played at Rupp Arena.
Featured in the UKIT arc Iona, which will play Kentucky, Texas A&M and Boston University.
A new twist to the Wildcats' schedule is an SEC encounter with Georgia at Louisville's Freedom Hall on Dec 30.
Said Sutton about the schedule, "With the loss of Kenny Walker and Roger Harden from the starting lineup, we'll be experimenting a lot in December and we have some strong tests during that time. Three of our December opponentsTexas Tech, Indiana and Louisvillewere in the NCAA Tournament last year, so we should be ready once our SEC schedule rolls around."
Overall, 15 of UK's 27 opponents advanced to NCAA postseason action last campaign. Six Wildcat games will be televised nationally. Those contests are: at Louisville (Dec. 27, CBS), LSU (Jan. 18, ABC and Feb. 21, NBC), Navy (Jan. 25 ABC), at Alabama (Feb. 7 NBC) and an opponent to be named later (March 1, CBS).
Yugoslavia and Kentucky will play an exhibition on Nov. 18 at Rupp before former UK assistant Lake Kelly brings his Austin Peay Governors to town for the season opener on Nov. 29.

ford was an assistant under Roy Chipman at Pittsburgh and still holds that title despite the resignation of Chipman last season. Smith is looking to replace Tevester Anderson who recently took a similar position at Georgia. . .As mentioned in last month's TCP, former Wildcat offensive tackle Vernon Johnson signed a free agent contract with the Houston Oilers of the NFL. With the signing Johnson also was given a $5,000 bonus. . .The St. Louis Cardinals have given ex-Wildcat safety Paul Calhoun another chance at making the club. Calhoun, who was cut by St. Louis last summer, has signed a free agent contract with the Cardinals. . .Calhoun's defensive backfield mate, Russell Hairston, was released by the New England Patriots because he failed his physical. However, if the former UK defensive back can get his ailing knee back into shape he still may pass the examination later. . .Former tackle Tom Richey had a good mini camp with the Cincinnati Bengals. Richey, who inked a free agent contract with the Bengals a few weeks ago, impressed Cincinnati offensive line coach Jim McNally with his work habits. . .Another ex-Cat had an impressive performance in a NFL mini camp. It came from Maurice Douglass who was an eighth-round draft choice of the Chicago Bears. At his cornerback position Douglass picked off nine passes during the Bears' mini camp. . .One of last year's defensive ends, Brian Williams, was invited to try out with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles liked what they saw and have offered Williams a free agent contract. However, the Eagles indicated that Williams must rehabilitate a nagging knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery at the end of last season. . .Offensive guard Jim Reichwein recently had a tryout with the Detroit Lions. The Lions were impressed enough with his progress that they offered him a free agent contract and invited him to camp in July. The Orlando Renegades of the USFL have also offered a free agent deal to Reichwein. . .UK graduate assistant Mike Wilkins has left the Wildcat coaching staff to take a similar position at Maryland under Bobby Ross. Wilkins will probably work with the Terrapins' quarterbacks and receivers.
