THE HERALD-ADVERTISER . Sunday

Mr. J. D. Harkins
Harkins & Harkins, Attys.
Prestonsburg, Ky.
Dear Mr. Barking:
Original papers in the suit styled "John Hatcher Heirs versus
John Hatcher Devizees' filed in about 1851 in the Floyd County Cir-
cuit Court in Prestonsburg. ,
In April 1934 these records were there as I read the will of
John Hatcher and other papers which were then filed in Box 12. At
that time I neglected to get a certified copy of the will. notice to
take depositions and the bill of complaint.
. I wondered if you had had occasion to use any of these papers
in the last few years. If so would you please look in your files to
see if you have any of them. If you do, would you kindly mail me
on the enclosed card which can be mailed in the self-addressed stamp—
ed envelope.
These papers are important to me because I am trying to estab-
lish proof of the names of the children of John Hatcher. .
Any a8sistance you can give me will be deeply'appreciated.
Sincerely yours, ,

Dear Mr. Long:
Your latter of May 23rd is received and notod, and I an rcturning
the card which you enclosed.
As a matter of fact I do not recall that I have avar had occasion
to look at or nxamine the papers to which you rarer.
Mrs. Wyolyn Johns Salisbury of Prestonsburg dens a great deal
of work in caScs with ancnstral invastigations; so does Mrs.
Ruth Sowards of Prastonsburg ( she is thp daughtnr of Joe M.
Davidson who in his life tins was Assistant Cashier of The Bank
Josephine ). It occurs to me too that possibly Mrs. Osa Ligon
of Prostonsburg, or my sister Mrs. Iley B. Browning, P. O. Box
126, Ashland, Kentucky. and my other sister Mrs. n. F. VanLand-
ingham of 7300 S. W. 14th Strnet, Miami 44, Florida, formnrly
Mrs. G. L. Howard of 1205 Charlaston AVpnue, Huntington, Wnst
Virginia; might be able to givn you the information which they
haVQ gathered relative to the children of John Hatchor.
Mrs. Ligon's mother and my own Mother were sisters, each of them
hays SQVGral bars in the D.A.R., and our ancestry gOas back
just as well.
Mrs. VanLandingham nxpects to be in Prestonsburg possibly by
Decoration Day or early in June and will be here for SAVnral
months. Mrs. Ligon is at St. Albans or Charlnston for the
graduation nXorcisos of her grand-daughter this Wank. I just
telephoned Mrs. Sowards at the Seward rasidenCn and the maid
informs me that she is out of town for sevwral days. Mrs.
Salisbury I hays not been able to contact by tolephone as yet.
I am reasonably ours that each of the ladies mnntioned above
would know considerably morn about the Hatcher family and the
immediate heirs of John Hatchar than I. Most frnquently one
or tho other of them present memoranda which they have made
at the Court House or obtained dirnctly or indirectly as to
different ancnstors.
At various times when yourFather was in my office or that I
had the pleasure of seeing him, he neVPr mentioned to me any
internst in the Hatchar family, nor did I mention that the
Hatcher family is in our anccstral line, and I did not know of
your connections until your lattar today.

WhateVor I can do to help you obtain the information you desire
I will be more than pleased to do, but as suggested in supra
I belieVn that you can obtain results much more quickly through
either of the ladies that I haVe mentioned.
In addition to my grand-mother being a Hatcher herself, another
one of the Hatcher girls married Honorable R. T. Burns of Louisa,
Kentucky but Aunt Caroline Hatcher Burns is long since dead.
Two of hnr children, John Burns and MrS. filizabeth Johnson still
reside in Louisa. One of her grand-sons John Horton resides
in Louisa and the other grand-son Rowland Horton liVes in
Ashland.
If at any time I see anyone from whom I think I might obtain
any information relative to the John Hatcher hairs I will be
rlad to inquire and write you.
Whenever you are in Prestonsburg please be sure to drop into
the office and Spa me.

Sincerely yours,

Joesph D. Harkins
