73-66 la ^cummce Satundofy
Fighting for their lives and the No. 1 national ranking, Kentucky held off a stubborn Kansas team Saturday night in Lawrence and headed back home with a 73-66 win.
It was a satisfying but disappointing win for the Cats. Satisfying that they could escape with their record still unblemished, but disappointing after learning that former Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp had died only minutes after the contest had ended.
Perhaps, it was only fitting that Kentucky should play Kansas during those final hours. And it cam almost to the day, one year from the night that Rupp stood at mid-court at Rupp Arena to dedicate the finest collegiate basketball playing facility in the world.
Kentucky trailed most of the first half, until the Cats put on a ten-point blitz late in the half to overcome a 26-22 deficit.
James Lee sparked much of the drive with six straight points, combined with a Kyle Macy 15-footer and a goal-tending basket allowed to Mike Phillips. That made it 32-26 with 3:21 left in the half.
Coach Joe B. Hall's charges forged out front by nine points, 43-33 with six straight points at the outset of the second half, but Ted Owens' Jayhawks refused to die.
With freshman Darnell Valentine completely destroying UK the entire night, the Jayhawks closed to witMn two points, 66-64, with less than two minutes remaining.
And Kansas had the opportunity to tie it when the top free throw shooter in the Big Eight Conference of a year ago, missed a pair.
Ken Koenigs, who was two for two at the line, missed both opportunities with 1:36 left on the clock.
Macy came back and bagged a pair for Kentucky with 1:27 left and added a third with 0:23 and Truman Claytor sewed it up with a pair of free throws at 0:21 to make it 71-64.
Owens thought his team played well but noted Kentucky's past experience.
' T thought that we could hurt them inside. We didn't make the zone move," said Owens. With the 1-3-1 you should make the baseline man move and shift. Kentucky is a very fine basketball team. However, I thought that we could beat them tonight. They're very experienced in winning. They have been in the NCAA finals, they won the NIT and the Southeastern Conference. We need to win some of these big games and when we grow confidence we'll be a very fine basketball team."
Macy was high for Kentucky with 15 points while Mike Phillips had a good game with 14 points. Rick Robey could never get on track offensively, scoring
only 8 points. But he did haul down 10 rebounds.
Givens, who had a terrible first half while hitting only 1 of 5 from the field,
Givens, who had a terrible first half while hitting only 1 of 5 from the field, finished with 10 points. Truman Claytor and James Lee scored 8 points each.
Valentine, the super guard from
Kansas City, led all scorers with 17 points while Paul Mokeski, the Kansan 7-1 giant, and Donnie Von Moore tallied 12 poinits each.
John Douglas, brother of former Alabama star Leon Douglas, added 11 points for the Jayhawks. It was the Jayhawks' first loss of the season after five consecutive wins.
For the game, Kentucky hit only a fair 49.1 clip from the field while
