                            JAMES F. HARDYMON GIFT

Recommendation: that the Board of Trustees accept a pledge of $1,000,000 from James F.
Hardymon of Lexington, Kentucky, to create and endow the James F. Hardymon Chair in
Urologic Research in the College of Medicine's Division of Urology in the Department of
Surgery.

Background: Mr. Hardymon, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Textron
Corporation of Providence, Rhode Island, is a former member of the University of Kentucky
Board of Trustees and holds a bachelor's and master's degree in civil engineering from the
University. A native of Maysville, Kentucky, Mr. Hardymon is one of the University's most
generous supporters. Mr. Hardymon requests the University apply for a matching $1,000,000
allocation from the state's Research Challenge Trust Fund. Mr. Hardymon is chair of the UK
Committee for Urologic Progress, which helps support the clinical, research and education
mission of the Division of Urology. The pledge will be paid in five annual installments of
$200,000 beginning in 2000. The endowment agreement with Mr. Hardymon states that the
position shall be an endowed chair when the principal of the fund equals or exceeds $1,000,000.
