FIVE YEARS AGO
* Behind some awesome board work and tenacious man-to-man defense, Kentucky blasted Florida State 97-78 in the first round of the NCAA Mideast Regional, played at Bowling Green. UK jumped out to an 18-5 lead but State got back within 22-17 before UK broke the game open with a 49-27 halftime margin, scoring 18 of the final 22 points in the half. UK held a shocking 34-13 halftime rebounding edge and finished with a 54-31 difference. Kyle Macy led UK with 16 points while Fred Cowan and LaVon Williams scored 14 each. Sam Bowie scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The win advances Kentucky to the Mideast Regional second round, to be played in Rupp Arena. Four of the nation's best teams will be there as
UK plays Duke and Indiana meets Purdue.
The UK baseball team went to Starkville, Miss., and downed the highly ranked Bulldogs 9-4. State was 29-1 at home last year. UK got home runs from Mark Hredzak. Dan Potot-sky and Greg Ryle. Jeff Keener got the win pitching five no-hit innings. State came back to bomb UK 10-0 the next day. The Wildcats split two games with Tennessee, losing the first game of a twinbill 3-2 before coming back to win 7-4 with homers by Pototsky and Mike Harding.

*With All-America Dan Issel fouling out with ten minutes to go and three other Wildcats also fouling out, number one ranked Kentucky fell 106-100 to Jacksonville in the Mideast Regional finals. A brilliant effort by a group of sophomores and juniors reduced a ten-point Jacksonville lead to 102-100 with 45 seconds left, but two free throws by Rex Morgan decided it. Issel scored 28 points to lead UK. Tom Parker had 21, Terry Mills 18 and Mike Pratt 14. Morgan had 28 points and Artis Gilmore 24 for Jacksonville.
*The UK Kittens finished the year with the second best mark in the conference at 11-3. Ole Miss was 10-1. UK was 16-6 overall. Johnny Newman of Ole Miss was the conference's leading scorer.
*Ron Sciarro, an all-state quarterbacks from Beaver Falls, Pa., signed a football grant with UK. Sciarro will play in Pennsylvania's Big 33 game along with UK signees Doug Kotar, Mark Campbell and Dan Jadgmann.
"Three homers by Steve Tingle led UK to a-10-7 win over Oglethorpe College. Richard Durbin's ninth-inning homer proved decisive. Reliever Tom Bannon gained the win.
