The first organization of postal employees in Louisville was formed in 1895 and was known as Branch 80 of the National Association of Post Office Clerks. This group lasted three years. The organization that became Local No. 4 immediately predated the formation of the National Federation in 1906. Louisville was one of six locals represented at the gathering that created the N.F.P.O.C. As Federal employees are precluded from striking, the postal union devoted much of its activity to influencing postal legislation. The local also provided sick benefits and other services to its members. These are records of Local No. 4 of the National Federation of Post Office Clerks and its predessor, Branch 80 of the National Association of Post Office Clerks. The materials include minutes, financial statements, reports and correspondence of the Allied Council of Federal Employees in Louisville, to which the postal local belonged. These materials cover the years 1942 to 1954. There are also minutes and the constitution and bylaws of the local, as well as materials on the 1954, 1956, and 1958 conventions of the Kentucky federation of Post Office Clerks. Senority lists of the Louisville Post Office are present, along with miscellaneous materials such as clippings, union publications, and reports from national conventions. There are also records of the Allied Council of Federal Employees which is composed of representatives from postal and railway unions.Organized in the following categories: Local No. 4; Allied Council of Federal Employees, 1942-1954; Central Kentucky District minutes; Kentucky Federation of Postal Clerks; National Federation of Post Office Clerks; National Association of Letter Carriers Bulletin, 1954-1956; Louisville Post Office.
