Dr. Otis A. Singletary University of Kentucky President
Now in his eighth year as president of the University of Kentucky, DR. OTIS A. SINGLETARY is a Mississippian whose route to the Bluegrass State curled through Louisiana, Texas, North Carolina and Washington, D. C.
He came to Lexington from a position as University of Texas vice-chancellor for academic affairs. Previously, in Washington, he had been director of the U. S. Job Corps in the early stages of its development before moving to the American Council on Education as vice-president. He had gone to the capital in 1964 after three years as chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The UNC appointment terminated Dr. Singletary's first association with the University of Texas, this a seven-year stay that saw him, as a young historian, rise rapidly in rank from instructor to full professor and begin the shift to administrative work, first as associate dean and later as assistant to the president.
The Kentucky president, and his wifethe former Gloria Walton, met when both were students at Millsaps College. He later earned master's and doctoral degrees at Louisiana State. The Singletarys have two daughters, Bonnie and Kendall, and a son, Scott.
Cliff Hagan Director of Athletics
"I've been preparing for this all my life," CLIFF HAGAN said before taking over as athletics director at the University of Kentucky in 1975. Hagan succeeded Harry Lancaster as director after serving as assistant director for three years.
Hagan's path to the athletics directorship began in Owensboro, Kentucky, where he established a then state high school tournament record of 41 points in leading Owensboro to victory over Lafayette in the championship game of the 1949 state high school tournament.
At UK, he played on teams that won 86 of 91 games and an NCAA championship (1951). The 1954 team, undefeated in 25 games, elected not to participate in the national tournament.

JOE B. HALL'S record as Wildcat head coach for the past four years stands at 79-36. During the 1976 season his team won the National Invitational Tournament and ended the year with a 20-10 record.
Hall became No. 1 varsity assistant and head freshman Coach to Rupp after Harry C. Lancaster was named permanent athletic director Feb. 1, 1969. His record with the freshmen was 60-15, including an undefeated (22-0) season (1971-72) which resulted in the Kittens being crowned National Freshman Champions by the Basketball News.
During his first season as head coach, the Wildcats won their last nine conference games to sew up the SEC title.
His ten-year coaching record is 155-92. Broken down, it shows a 57-50 five-year mark at Regis, a 19-6 record at Central Missouri, and a 79-36 four-year record at Kentucky.
A popular personality on the clinic and convention circuits, Hall also has had much international exposure. In addition to the Globetrotters tour in 1951, and the "Down Under" tour in 1974, he has helped conduct basketball clinics for the U.S. Army in Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska (1968) and at Ramstein Air Base in Frankfurt, Germany and the RAF Base at Mildenhall, England in 1975. Dick Parsons (1959-61)
The smallest player (at 5'9") ever to play at Kentucky until Randy Embry came along, grew up to be the Wildcat's chief assistant coach.
Dick Parson came to Kentucky from a small coal mining communityYancey, in Harlan County. He graduated third in the class, scholastically, from Harlan High School, the same school that produced "Wah Wah" Jones. He recounts to Russell Rice in "Big Blue Machine":
"Our little gym looked more like a bam than anything else. It had a lot of cracks, no heat, although at one time there was a potbellied stove, and it was so cold in winter that we played in sweat shirts.
"We would play before school, at noon, and after school, then we'd go home and eat and come back at night. There were some naked lights, so we'd just take two wires and cross them and play until about 9 or 9:30. That's a lot of basketball, but I felt like that was where I learned some of the fundamentals and style of play that helped me a great deal later on. Our grade school team played on dirt courts along the creeks and up and down the Cumberland River.
"In my senior year at Harlan High I was not recruited by many schools. I had decided to maybe go out of state, but Hupp and Lancaster sent someone down to see me play in a tournament game, and Rupp came in to visit me and Bobby Slusher of Lone Jack. We both eventually signed at UK. I guess if I had known how tough it would be for a small fellow to play at UK, I never would have attended. At the time I was thinking if I couldn't make it there, I could go elsewhere. And when Coach Rupp kept calling me "Bobby" thinking I was Bobby Watson, I knew I had it made."
As a freshman, Parsons was a regular starter on a Kitten team which featured Billy Ray Lickert, Bobby Slusher, Carroll Rurchett, Ned Jennings and Howard Dardeen. At the beginning of the 1958-59 season the UK Fact Book says of Parsons:
"He was a regular starter at guard with Harry Lancaster's impressive yearling squad last season but few of the "gues-sers" tend to give him much of a chance to beat our bigger men for a varsity starting berth."
At the beginning of Dick's senior year ('60-'61) the Fact Book had changed it's tune considerably:
"Dick (Little Man) Parsons is a diminutive playmaker equally dangerous in every phase of the cage game ... He can dash in for a quick crip or hit with deadly accuracy on a two-handed push from far out . . . He is a quick-thinking competitor who makes up in hustle and determination what he lacks in size.
"Parsons, who is not prone to getting hurt takes a terrific physical beating in most games."
Dick was one of the most honored athletes in UK history. He holds the distinction of captaining two varsity sports at UKbasketball and baseball.
He was a two-time (1960, '61) recipient of the coveted A. B. Chandler award, given annually for the player best exemplifying the qualities of leadership, scholarship, character and ability. Only four other Wildcats have twice been so honored since the award was originated in 1951.
Holding more Wildcat baseball records than any other player, he was an All-Conference shortstop in 1959 and 1961, All-NCAA District 1960, 61, and All-American '61. He hit .400 his senior year.
Dick was treasurer of the K Club, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa (national men's leadership society) and in his junior year was named "Outstanding Student of the College of Education."
After graduation, he was an assistant football coach at Glasgow High School for two years and baseball and basketball coach at Boyle County High from 1963 to 1968.
Parsons returned to the University in 1969 as head baseball coach and is presently in his fifth year as Joe Hall's top assistant coach.

Kentucky and Auburn have had an interesting series over a period of years. Recently Aubum has been a very difficult team for Kentucky to beat at Auburn. Bob Davis had never lost to Kentucky at Auburn until this year but by the same token he has never won one here in Lexington.
When I think of Kentucky vs Auburn, I think I go back to the Joel Eaves days. With all the white hair he had they called him Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. He played seven smaller basketball players. He didn't have any real little guys and he didn't have any real big players, but they ran the shuffle as well as I've ever seen it run. They played in that little quonset hut and were very tough to beat in there.
I remember "Cotton" Nash and Larry Pursiful had an outstanding game down there when they had Layton Johns ("60-63). Kentucky won rather handily that day. Coach Rupp just moved Nash and Pursiful to one side of the floor and went two on two and Aubum just couldn't handle them.
The best Aubum player I remember will be on the court tonightMike Mitchell. During their first meeting this season Mitchell did not have a particularly good game but he is an outstanding player. I know that Kentucky tried to recruit him. John Mengelt ('69-71) was also very tough.
Really, I've been a little disappointed in Auburn's team this year. Like Kentucky, the Tigers have a junior ball club. It should be a veteran team but they just got started badly. They lost their first two conference games at home and they haven't been able to come back from it. Eddie Johnson didn't look like the same Eddie Johnson we saw a year ago and Pepto Bolden is playing pretty good for them, and of co
