The life of cut flowers can be
more than doubled by use of a new
chemical preservative discovered by
a chemist at the Denver Research
Institute of the University of
Denver.
Two years of research by the
chemists W. R. Thompson, went
Into development of the new compound. It keeps cut flowers blooming "significantly longer" than
other available commercial formulas, according to an article being
published by the American Chemical Society.
Tried Sugar
"For years housewives have practiced elementary rules for.prolong-in- g
the life of cut flowers, such as
frequent changes of water, stem
recutting, and placing the flowers
away from direct light and heat
and drafts. Addition of such simple
home chemicals as sugar and aspirin to the water has also been
tried, but with discouraging results," the report says.
Several formulas are now on the
market which do, in some cases,
prolong the life of cut flowers considerably, it is reported.
