"Kentucky's football recruiting got off to a fast start when coach Fran Curci signed some of the state's finest prospects, including All-State Jeff Smith of Washington County to a SEC letter-of-intent. Other signees included James Hasty, William Burse, Ron Knott, Choo Choo Lee, Robert Mullins and Eddie Simmons. UK also signed Cam Jacobs of Miami, Florida, a brother of Chris Jacobs.
*The basketball Wildcats raced off with an 80-46 win over outmanned Baylor and Kyle Macy paved the way
with 17 points. Derrick Hord and Jay Shidler chipped in with 11 and 10 points in that order. UK led by 40-17 at the halfway mark.
"Kentucky routed South Carolina 126-81, breaking the Rupp Arena scoring mark of 121 set against West Virginia a year earlier. Kentucky built up a 61-39 halftime score and never looked back as five players scored in double figures. The Hoosiers led 54-38 at the half and Kentucky never got close. The intense game had bitter ending in the closing minutes when IU coach Bobby Knight "tapped" Kentucky coach Joe Hall on the head as he walked away. Although UK assistant Lynne Nance was in a fighting stance ready to challenge Knight, the Hoosier coach said the tap was meant affectionately and that he had been doing the same thing to his players for years. Scott May had 25 points for Indiana and Kevin Grevey led UK with 22, in a game played in Bloomington.

"Senior guard Jimmy Dan Connor exploded for 35 points, as a rejuvenated Kentucky basketball team whipped ninth-ranked North Carolina 90-78 in Freedom Hall. The Tar Heels held a commanding 31-16 lead when UK scored a 23-3 comeback over the final eight minutes of the first half.
Connor hit 15 of 21 shots and was aided by 16 points by senior forward Kevin Grevey.

"Just one week into the season, UK has taken over first place in the AP and UPI basketball polls. UCLA is second in both, with New Mexico State third.
"Unbeaten and top-ranked Kentucky built up a 63-38 halftime lead in defeating Indiana 109-92. Kentucky hit 68.4 percent from the field the first half and outrebounded the Hoosiers 59-37 for the game. Dan Issel had 32 points and 19 rebounds. Sophomore Tom Parker came off the bench with 15 points.
