The Odyssey Magazine photographs contain contact sheets, portraits, polaroids, and other types of photographs used for the purpose of the magazine, from the 1830s-2005, predominately documenting 1980-2000.
Odyssey is published by the Office of the Vice President for Research and covers the latest research advances, innovative scholarship, and outstanding people that are part of UK's research enterprise.
Odyssey began in 1982 and is distributed to 20,000 readers, including UK graduate degree alumni, local and state decision makers, media, Kentucky public libraries, friends of UK across the country, and full-time faculty.
Over the years,
Odyssey has received many awards from CASE-Kentucky, part of the national organization that supports educational advancement. In 2007,
Odyssey was honored twice: The 25th anniversary issue won the Grand Award for Magazines and Alicia Gregory received an Excellence Award for Feature Writing for "Green Energy," the cover story for Winter 2007. In 2006, Jeff Worley received an Excellence Award for Feature Writing for "Miles Osland: Packing a Mean Sax" which appeared in the Fall 2005 issue. And in 2001
Odyssey won the Grand Award for Magazines for the Fall 2000 issue, the Excellence Award for Magazines for the Spring 2001 issue, and Excellence Awards for Feature Writing for "Technology with the Human Touch" (Jeff Worley) and "Not Dying for Their Art" (Alicia Gregory).
The Odyssey Magazine photographs contain contact sheets, portraits, polaroids, and other types of photographs used for the purpose of the magazine, from the 1830s-2005, predominately documenting 1980-2000. Some of these dates were derived from notes that were originally on photographs. The collection is organized into three series based on their original order: photographs foldered by topic or the title of the article the images were used for; person name, and oversized photographs that contain both individual and topical photographs.
Some folders contain additional materials such as printed e-mails, Odyssey Magazine articles associated with the photographs, release forms for the photographs, and/or notes. A few folders only contain notes that refer to another folder's contact sheets for photographs of a particular individual. Photographs circa 1960 and older are copies of original photographs. The Henry Clay and Related Items folder contains photographs of paintings and letters, as well as copied photographs of Henry Clay.
Some of the photographs are copyrighted by other sources such as the Lexington Herald-Leader, Courier-Journal, and NASA.
