Angier was removed from the mission, and succeeded by Rev. S. H.
Montgomery, 0. S. D., who for a short time, and with occasional
assistance from Father Badin, and from his own associates of St.
Rose, managed to serve both the congregation in Scott county and
that in Lexington. He was soon afterwards relieved altogether of
the care of the Lexington church, by the appointment of Rev. Wim.
T. Willett, 0. T. D., who served it alone until disabled by sickness
in I823, uwhen Rev. Samuel H. Montgomery, 0. S. D., was again
sent to his assistance. Father \V. T. WN'illett is represented by Dr.
Spalding as a man "as remarkable for his talents as he was for his
years. He won the hearts of all who knew him." He fell a .vic-
tim to consumption on the 9th day of May, 1824, and his remains
are interred in the new Catholic Cemetery at Lexington. Two
other priests of those early days are buried here also, the Rev. John
McCormick, and    Rev.  Wim. 'Morgan, a native of Ireland,
and a convert to the Catholic faith, who died at the residence of
Major John Hanley in No-vemnber, 1840.
    In i836, Father Edward McMahon undertook the serious task
of building a new church. Finding it impossible to raise the nec-
essarv funds at hoome, where the Catholic people were not able to
subscribe the full amount, he xvent to New Orleans to collect, and
is said to have realized the suml of 5,ooo. Returning in 1837, he
erected the present St. Peters.o which wvas opened for Divine ser-
vice and dedicated by Right Rey. Dr. Chabrat on the 3d (lay of
December, 1837.
    The list of pastors of St. Peters Church, Lexington, between
the years 1824 and i864 includes the following names: Rev. Guy
Ignatius Ciabrat, for the year 1825: Rev. Francis 1P. Henrick, for
part of the year 1826; Rev. George A. -l. Elder, from 1826 to 1830;
Rev. Edwa-d Mc'Maholn, from 1830 to 1835; Rev. John McGill, from
i835 to 1836: Rev. Edward McIl-ahon, for 1837; Rev . Mr. J. Spalding
until September, 1838: Revs. Edward and Abraham M\cA:fahon and
John Joyce, from 1839 to 1849; Rev. John lMaguire, from i849 to
i853; and from that date to i864, Rev. Francis F. Di M\aria, S. J..
Rev. Peter MIci\ahon, Rev. H. G. Allen, Rev. Joseph Brogard, and
Rev. Peter Perry.
    In 1864, the Rev. John Henry Bekkers became pastor and re-
