Biography/History

Thomas Hart Shelby was the son of Isaac Shelby, first governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Scope and Content

This is a journal kept by Major Thomas Shelby Hart on a trip he made east in 1831. Shelby traveled more than four months, visiting Washington, D. C, Maryland, and New York among other places. He received a tour of the White House guided by President Andrew Jackson and visited General William Henry Harrison in Cincinnati. The journal ends just as Shelby arrives in Cincinnati prior to returning to his home in Kentucky. The journal was edited and published in 1962 by Shelby's great-grandson, William Campbell Scott.
