Biographical note John Hunt Morgan (1870-1940) an oil businessman, was the son of Calvin Cogswell Morgan (1827-1892) and the nephew of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan (1825-1864). He lived in Lexington, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania and married Virginia Jeffrey, daughter of Rosa Vertner and Alexander Jeffrey. Scope and Contents note The Morgan family papers (dated 1856-1940; 3.12 cubic feet; 7 boxes) comprise correspondence, legal papers, maps, scrapbooks, and poems, which document the personal and business interests of John Hunt Morgan (1870-1940) and his family. The bulk of the papers detail lawsuits over lands claimed by the Morgan family, particularly in Menifee County, Kentucky. The correspondence contains family correspondence, John H. Morgan's business letters, letters from his boyhood friends, and letters concerning Virginia Morgan's efforts to publish her poetry. Correspondents include Calvin Cogswell Morgan, R. C. Morgan, Henrietta Hunt Morgan, James Lane Allen, John Randolph Bolling, Desha Breckinridge, General John Hunt Morgan, Robert Bridges, Claude Johnson, Rosa V.J.
