*Tlie UK baseball team enjoyed their best offensive production of the year as they sprayed 22 hits in romping past Austin Peay by 13-5. Mark Hredzak had a homer and double and Mike Botkin had two doubles and five RBIs.
*Kentucky basketball signee Bret Bearup was named to Basketball Weekly's first five-man All-American team. Guard Jim Master, also UK-bound, was named to the third team. Both Bearup and Master were also named to the Parade All-American second team, along with the McDonald's All-American Dream Team.
Two Kentucky prep stars, one headed for Kentucky, were named to Joe Terranova football list of the "80 Great Ones." Jeff Smith of Washington County is headed for UK while Chris Brown of Owensboro is going to Notre Dame.
TEN YEARS AGO
*Larry Carter, a quarterback-defensive back from Englewood, Term., has
become the 26th prospect to sign a national football letter-of-intent with Kentucky.
*After last week's Mideast Regional upset of Indiana, Kentucky moved into second place in both the UPI and AP polls. UCLA was first. Other finals four teams were Louisville (4th) and Syracuse (6th).
*Pesky Syracuse refused to quit but Kentucky had too much manpower as they recorded a 95-79 victory in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament, held in San Diego. Jack Givens came off the bench to lead Kentucky with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Mike Phillips also contributed off the bench, hitting five of six shots for ten points. Kevin Grevey had 14 points, Jimmy Dan Conner 12 and Mike Flynn 11 as the Wildcats advanced to the NCAA final against Johnny Wooden's UCLA team, which nipped Louisville 75-74.
*John Wooden won his tenth national title in 12 years as UCLA nipped a tough Kentucky team 92-85 in Wooden's final game as a college coach. Kentucky continued to battle back but never could catch the Bruins
in the late going. The turning point may have come when UK cut a UCLA deficit of ten to one point with 6:23 left when Kevin Grevey went to the line to shoot an one-and-one plus a technical foul. Grevey missed both foul shots and Kentucky couldn't capitalize on its possession for what could have been a possible five-point play.
UCLA, which played only six players the entire way, led 43-40 at the half. UK had led 20-14. Richard Washington scored 28 points for UCLA and Dave Meyers 24. Grevey led the Wildcats with 34 points. Bob Guyette chipped in 16 and Mike Flynn ten

*UK Athletic Director Harry Lancaster underwent surgery for removal of a blood clot in his right leg. It was the second such operation in two weeks.
*Jim Green of UK won the 100-yard dash in the seventh annual Kentucky Relays with a 9.4 clocking, edging Ivory Crockett. Eight records were set in the relays.
*Dave Bair's tenth inning homer gave UK a 3-0 win over Vanderbilt. Tom Bannon went the distance for the Cats, allowing eight hits.

*As expected, Dan Issel and Mike Pratt walked away with most of all the hardware at the basketball banquet. Doug Flynn won the freshman leadership award.
*Ronnie Lyons of Mason County High School, the top scorer in the state of Kentucky with a 34.7 average, signed a grant with UK. The 5-10 Lyons said he narrowed his final choice to UK, North Carolina and Alabama.

"Utterly Ridiculous," UK basketball star Bob Burrow said of rumors he planned to withdraw from UK and return to Texas. It was the second time rumors have persisted Burrow was leaving UK.
*Senior captain Billy Evans won both the Albert B. Chandler Trophy and the Jerome Lederman Trophy as the UK Alumni Association honored the UK basketball team. Phil Grawe-meyer was announced as captain of next year's team.
*The University of Illinois spoiled the debut of the UK tennis team with an 8-1 win. Bill Gess of UK, who is from Lexington, was the only Wildcat winner for Coach H.M. Downing's team.

Kentucky-flavored Southern hospitality will greet NCAA officials and representatives of the news media attending the Final Four tournament in Lexington.
The city formally welcomes its guests with traditional Kentucky food and entertainment at the Kentucky Horse Park on the evening preceding the semifinals.
Lexington-based Exile, one of the hottest country music bands in the nation, heads the list of native entertainers.
Other Kentucky performances of national stature include The Judds, a mother-daughter singing duo from Ashland; John Conlee of Versailles and Steve Wariner of Russell Springs.
Imported from Mississippi, master of ceremonies Jerry Clower will keep the evening's pace fast and light-hearted.
The Southern-style menu will feature country-cured ham, grits, spoonbread, beer cheese, biscuits, burgoo, cornbread, bourbon ball candy, and, of course, Kentucky bourbon.
Hosted by the Lexington NCAA Committee, the media party will be private. However, the entertainers will perform at Memorial Coliseum on the UK campus for a free-to-the-public program later that night.
