             Biographical/Historical note
The Historic American Building Survey (HABS) was begun by the National Park Service, a division of the United States' Department of the Interior. HABS attempts to catalog American buildings of historical, cultural, and architectural interest. Multiple formats are used to catalog the selected buildings: measured drawings, written histories, large-format photographs, etc.
HABS was founded in 1933, through a cooperative agreement between the private sector, the National Park Service, and the Library of Congress. Multiple agencies handle the different responsibilities: AIA (American Institute of Architects) identifies and catalogs the structures, NPS performs the survey work, and LC serves as the repository for HABS inventory forms, drawings, and photographs.
Various HABS projects have created more than 350,000 measured drawings, large-format photographs, and written histories for more than 35,000 historic structures. The majority of the buildings selected are at least 200 years old; the earliest buildings pre-date Columbus, though some selections from the 20th century are included.
HABS and its sister program, HAER (the Historic American Engineering Record), are some of the largest and most frequently-used collections in the Library of Congress' Prints and Photographs Division. Both continue to produce new documentation each year; many of these collections are now available online.

The prints that Special Collections and Digital Programs hold were produced from the original negatives
