ARTICLE V: Relationship of Hospital to Academic
                          and Research Programs Under the Aegis of
                                       the Medical Center


    The College of Medicine and other professional Colleges within the Medical Center shall

continue to carry out a portion of their educational and research programs in the University

Hospital usually in collaboration with patient care activities. In accordance with the mission of
the Hospital, collaborative relationship shall be appropriately developed and maintained. The Deans
of the Colleges within the Medical Center shall retain authority and responsibility for their
respective educational and research activities. In order to assure excellence in both academic and
patient care programs which frequently are related, collaborative decision making between the
Dean of the College of Medicine, the Hospital Director and the Deans of other Medical Center

Colleges will take place under the overall guidance of the Vice President for the Medical Center.


                                  ARTICLE VI: Medical Staff


     SECTION 1. General. While the medical care of patients in the Hospital is the responsibility

of the Supervisors, it shall be the policy of the Supervisors to delegate this function, insofar
as may be legally permissible, to the Medical Staff. In so doing, the Supervisors recognize that

such delegation does not reduce their basic responsibilities and therefore retain responsibility and

authority to approve or rescind the Medical Staff Bylaws as delinated in Article II, Section 1

and take other actions as required in carrying out their basic responsibility for the care of patients.


     SECTION 2. Medical Staff. For purposes of these Bylaws, the words "Medical Staff" shall
include all physicians and dentists and other related health professions who are privileged to attend

patients in the Hospital or in any other medical care activity administered by the Hospital.


     SECTION 3. Organization of the Medical Staff. The Supervisors shall approve and authorize

the organization of the Medical Staff so as to discharge those duties and responsibilities assigned

to it by the Supervisors and specifically to accomplish the following functions:

     (a) To monitor the quality of medical care in the Hospital and make recommendations

          to the Supervisors to assure that all patients admitted to or treated at any of the facilities,

          departments or services of the Hospital shall receive high quality medical care,
