WHEREAS. private gift support increasingly enables the University of Kentucky
to achieve a dimension of educational, service and research accomplishments
otherwise unattainable and further serves as an example to stimulate other
giving, and

WHEREAS. Mr. and Mrs. John Y. Brown, Jr. , through the "Eleanor and John Y.
Brown, Jr. Foundation, " have established a $1, 000, 000 challenge gift for con-
struction of a major research facility for the study of aging at the University of
Kentucky Medical Center, thereby making an important contribution to the life of
the elderly and bringing distinction to the Commonwealth and to the University of
Kentucky, and

WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. John Y. Brown, Jr. have given tangible recognition and
comtended to the attention of the public the remarkable examples to the aged set
by the active. useful and extended lives of Colonel Harland Sanders and John Y.
Brown. Sr. , and

WHEREAS. this challenge gift will match a $1, 000, 000 potential appropriation
supported by Kentucky's Governor Wendell Ford from the 1974 Kentucky Legis-
lature, and

WHEREAS. this gift is recognized as the largest single cash gift by a private donor
to the University or its Medical Center, now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Trustees of the University of Kentucky
expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. John Y. Brown. Jr. , for their
commitment and extraordinary generosity displayed toward their Alma Mater.
