A SPECIAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM
V The College of Education offers programs designed to prepare teachers to
work with the mentally retarded, the orthopedically disabled (including the
cerebral palsied), the hard-of-hearing, the deaf, and the speech deviate. Pro- V
spective special education teachers are required to meet the general education `
requirements of all teachers in the elementary, junior high, or senior high school
field. Those preparing to be teachers of the orthopedically handicapped, the ‘
hard-of-hearing, the deaf, and the mentally retarded are required to meet the
professional-education requirements of the elementary, junior, or senior high i
school program. Those programs are designed to enable the undergraduate
student to obtain a broad base upon which the special education preparation
can be built. Opportunity is provided for a combining of student teaching in a
regular class and in a special class. Thus, within the framework of the under-
graduate program the student can earn certification in elementary, junior, or
senior high school plus certification in a special field.
All students in Special Education with the exception of Speech Correction-
ists must meet the general requirements for certification as elementary, iunior 3
high, or senior high school teachers. V
Additional courses in Special Education are being planned. Consult with ,
the advisor in Special Education for the complete curriculum.
