This course is designed to give students a fair amount of Huency in the use of the
spoken language. Vocabulary will be built by the use of images rather than by
translation, i.e. the direct method. Prereq: 2a, b.
4a-c FRENCH NOVEL AND DRAMA. (3 ea.) I, II, S Ryland
Reading of standard texts in prose, and drama. Verb drill, dictation, composition,
conversation drill, based on some text read and memorized. Reports on assigned
reading outside of classrooms. Prereq: 2a, b.

A scientific study of French sounds based on the International System of Phonetic
` Symbols. Prereq: 2a, b.
°6 ELEMENTARY AURAL-ORAL PRACTICE IN FRENCH. (1) Staff
Two hours a week. A course to improve pronunciation and comprehension of
i spoken French. Aural-oral drills, diction, and recordings.

This course is especially planned for teachers of phonetics both in high school and
in college. Prereq: 5a, b or equivalent.

A study of the representative writers of the XIX Century and the more important
literary movements. Outside reading and written reports on assigned topics. Prereq:

A course in the Classic Drama of the XVII Centucy. During the year the student
is expected to read in class plays from the works of Comeille, Racine and Moliere.
