             Biographical note
Historian Maude Ward Lafferty was born in 1869 and graduated from high school in Cynthiana, Kentucky. She continued her education by attending a Paris, Kentucky, convent. She married Judge William Thornton Lafferty, who established the University of Kentucky's College of Law. Maude Lafferty wrote
The Lure of Kentucky , a historical guidebook. She served as secretary of club service in the University of Kentucky's Department of Extension from 1924 to 1940. She affected a bureau of information to supply source material, books, historical data, speakers for club programs, and founded the University of Kentucky Woman's Club in 1909, serving as their first president. Additionally, she was the first president of the Woman's Club of Central Kentucky from 1914 to 1916 and the chairman of the board of the Kentucky Federation of Woman's Clubs. In 1924, she wrote and directed a sesquicentennial pageant for Harrodsburg and in 1925, one for Lexington. She died on January 11, 1962.

             Scope and Contents note
The Maude Ward Lafferty papers contain the correspondence of Judge A.H. Ward, some of which discuss the Civil War in Kentucky. The papers also include Lafferty's general correspondence and Lafferty's writings, such as a newspaper series, a radio broadcast script, and several typewritten manuscripts and rough drafts by Lafferty on specific subjects (the Botanic Gardens in Lexington, the University of Kentucky, Henry Clay, Harrodsburg, and early Kentucky history). Additionally, the papers contain notes and source material for Mrs. Lafferty's writings as well as nine scrapbooks. The first scrapbook contains some of Lafferty's correspondence. Scrapbooks two through six comprise newspaper clippings and articles on Kentucky history. Scrapbook seven includes clippings and pamphlets collected during World War One. Scrapbook eight and nine document Harrodsburg's Sesquicentennial celebration and Lexington's Sesquicentennial celebration.
