C56A Wildcats Win NCAASt. Louis Revisited
LSU Tigers Chosen Tops In SEC
With Kentucky's overpowering veteran team of 1977-78 graduated, the Southeastern Conference sportswritcrs and sportscasters recently turned to Baton lioiige, Louisiana, in search of a SEC champ for the coming season.
Meeting at the SEC Basketball Press Day festivities iii Birmingham, Alabama, the sports ioumalists voted for how they felt the SEC race would conclude and (hose Dale Brown's talented and veteran Tigers to be the team to beat. They also listed their choices for all-conference honors.
The newsmen picked four frontline players and a guard for the first team All-SEC. The guard chosen was Kentucky's 6-3 Kyle Macy. He was accompanied by Alabama's 6-6 Reginald King, LSU's 6-7 Durand Macklin, Tennessee's 6-9 Beggie Johnson and Mississippi Slate's 6-10 Rickey Brown. King and Macy were chosen unanimously.
The: LSU Bengals totalled 445 points to finish in first place. The voting was i lone on a 10 points for first, 9 for second, etc. basis. Kentucky, which walloped La Salle in its opener to support the newmcn's opinions, finished second with 382, followed by Alabama 370, Miss. State 354, Georgia 225, and Tennessee 217. Florida polled 168, Vander-bilt 145, Auburn 126 and Ole Miss 98.
Following iu the order in which the teams were selected, evaluations of their capabilities are given below.
LSUDale Brown was appreciative of the number one spot accorded his team but feared a "fat cat" approach to the season by his team. However, their Fatness can he seen in the fact that the Tigers have 10 combat-ready players who could be plaving anywhere in the league. Drown felt that Durand Macklin was All-American caliber and that he was blessed with an outstanding point guard in Ethan Martin. Jordy Hultberg was termed a great shooter and team leader. Creg Cook is an accomplished center and DcWayne Scales was described by Brown as a "Dynamite Player."
KENTUCKY'S Joe B. Hall is in a rebuilding year but the newsmen showed I heir confidence in his ability to keep the winning tradition alive in Lexington by listing his Wildcats to finish second. "Wo have more experienced players for the outside than the inside," noted Hall. Kyle Macy and Truman Claytor will

start at guard, Chuck Aleksinas at center and LaVon Williams and Freddie Cowan at forwards.
ALABAMAC. M. Newton is a member of the nation's Top Twenty Coaches and now with 10 years at Alabama is the dean of SEC coaches. He says his team is fourth. A great player, Reginald King, leads the Tide. Ken Johnson and Eddie Phillips work up front with him while Robert Scott and Joe Hancock run the outside.
MISS. STATE Jim Hatfield has moved from SW Louisiana to replace Ron Greene as head coach and feels that his players will be handicapped by having had a different coach each year. However, he has strong, talented players like Rickey Brown, Wiley Peck and transfer John Adams underneath the boards, with Ray White and Greg Grim returning at guards.
GEORGIAThe Bulldogs also have a new coach, Hugh Durham, who brings a 230-95 record from 12 years of coaching at Florida State. Walter Daniels will be his team leader with support from Jimmy Daughtry and Mark Slonaker scrapping for the other guard spot. Lavon Mercer and Lucius Foster are strong rebounders and three others are vying for the fifth spot.
' TENNESSEE Don Devoe, 117-70 in seven seasons at Va. Tech and Wyoming, succeeds Ray Mears and interim coach Cliff Wettig. He has three outstanding men Reggie Johnson, wing Terry Crosby and pointman Johnny Darden.
FLORIDA John Lotz is optimistic about his Gators and offered seven players as reasons. Reggie Hannah, Malcolm Cesare, John Corso and Jerry Bellamy
work near the boards with Ric Clarson, Mike Milligan and Mark Giombetti on the outside.
VANDERBILT Wayne Dobbs has his best Commodore team to date. It is led by Charles Davis and Greg Fuller at forwards, with Brian Allsmiller at center, and Mike Rhodes and Mark Elliot at guards.
AUBURN Charles H. "Sonny" Smith, has moved from East Tennessee
to southern Alabama to coach the Tigers, replacing the late Paul Lambert, who, died in a hotel fire. Lambert had replaced last year's coach Bob Davis and died prior to taking over the team.
OLE MISS Bob Weltlich says the strength of his team is underneath the basket. John Stroud leads his big men with Elston Turner and Kim Benson helping. Henry Jackson, Tom Warda and Chris Barrett are his top guards.
