Dr. David P. Gardner President University of Utah
DR. DAVID PIERPONT GARDNERnationally recognized as one of America's outstanding educational leaders became the 10th President of the University of Utah, August 1, 1973.
Born March 24, 1933, in Berkeley, California, Dr. Gardner attended public schools in his hometown and was graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelors degree in 1955. He returned to California to eam his M.A. degree in political science and Ph.D. degree in higher education from UC Berkeley in 1959 and 1966, respectively.
In becoming the University of Utah's 10th President, Dr. Gardner pledged himself to "excellence, distinction and rigor in the academic program," a vow which is reflected in the diversity of the speeches and papers he has authored in recent years. Dr. Gardner is concerned with "Politics and the Urban University," "Emerging Forms of Post-Secondary Education," "Alternative Forms of Higher Education," "The Management of Conflict," "The University and Public Service," "Faculty Members and Campus Governance," "Telecommunications in a Changing Educational World," and "Campus Unrest: Tactics and Strategy of the Radical Student."
In 1970, testifying before President Nixon's Commission on Campus Unrest, Dr. Gardner recommended that undergraduate education be placed nearer the top of national educational priorities and that funds be sought to reform and enrich the undergraduate learning experience.
