             Biographical note
Leslie Combs, Kentucky born lawyer and politician, was educated by the Rev. John Lyle, a well-known Presbyterian minister and teacher. He was a captain of scouts in the War of 1812, and saw action in the River Raisin campaign and in the relief of the siege at Fort Meigs, Ohio. After the war, he read law and entered the state bar in 1818. A Whig, Combs served several terms in the lower house of the Kentucky legislature between 1827 and 1859 and became Speaker in 1846. He worked as clerk of the Court of Appeals from 1860 to 1866.
