Florence, a native of Cynthiana, Ky, served as a machine gunner during World War II. He was captured in 1944 and spent seven months in a prisoner of war camp near Kuestin, Germany. After he was freed by the Russians' advance, Florence walked with fellow prisoners to Odessa, U.S.S.R, from which a ship took the Americans home. Florence's experiences as a soldier and prisoner of war led him to become a Baptist minister. He attended Georgetown College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1958, when his book was published, Florence was the pastor of Ormsby Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky. This is the original manuscript for Frank T. Florence, Jr.'s autobiographical work. The book describes Florence's wartime experiences in detail, and explores his evolving religious feelings. The manuscript is a typed draft, with editing changes and printing instructions written in. There is also some correspondence relating to the donation of the manuscript to the University of Kentucky, and a photograph of Florence. Paginated. Florence, Frank T.
