Will Be World's Finest
Sports-Medicine Complex Headed For UK
If all goes well, the University of Kentucky will become a pioneer in the sports medicine field and could be the home of the world's greatest health care facility for amateur and professional athletes.
The first step toward the program was achieved last week when the university's board of trustees voted to seek proposals from the private sector to develop and operate the sports-medicine program, which would involve education, research, patient care
and injury prevention.
The program would be housed in a complex on campus and would include a 60-to 100-bed hospital, an orthopedic clinic and a research center on about 10 acres of campus land that UK would lease to a successful bidder.
No state funds would be used in connection with the project.
"To my knowledge, no single university is as fully engaged in such a program" as envisioned at UK, said
Dr. Peter Bosomworth, chancellor of UK's Albert B. Chandler Medical Center.
Bosomworth said he hopes the proposals will be received within 30 to 60 days. Earlier, he told the UK board of trustees' finance committee that such a program could coincide with existing work in sports medicine already under way at UK.
The program's education component, he said, would be aimed at physicians, physical therapists, coach-
Blue-White Game Slated For April 27; QB's Shine In Scrimmage
Signal-callers Bill Ransdell, Tim Jones, Kevin Dooley and Bill Allen combined for 12 of 19 for 77 yards. However five of those incompletions were dropped by receivers.
Mayes and Shearer were in on many tackles throughout the day. Also the two players each recovered a fumble, respectively............
Rider, the bare-footed kicker, connected on 3 of 4 attempts, including a 49 yarder.
"With the wind being such a factor, "said Claiborne, "the best thing I saw today was the way the quarterbacks threw the football."
Foot-note . . .Mark Higgs was on hand Saturday to watch his teammates practice. Higgs, who injured his right knee during the first week of practice, has already started rehabilitation according to UK officials. The sophomore-to-be could be back by late August. . .'85 Wildcat freshman, Mike Pfeifer was also on the sidelines at Shively last Saturday watching his future teammates practice. Pfeifer is a 6-foot-7, 250 lb. defensive lineman from Trinity High School in Louisville.
A lot more is at 'steak' for the winner of the Blue-White football scrimmage. For the winners it means a steak dinner, and for the losers it's hot dogs and beans. And according to one assistant coach the losers might have to serve the winning team their dinner., But there's more to it than that.
This year's contest will be played April 27 at 7:00 p.m. in Commonwealth Stadium.
"We take it serious," said offensive back coach Greg Nord about the Blue-White scrimmage. This will be the first game-type situation, we will see them in. We always look forward to the spring game.
"There's still competition for positions."
Both teams are picked by the seniors, with the coaches overseeing the selections to make sure each position has enough depth.
The game itself will be treated as an actual game during regular season.
"We base things through mostly of what they do in the regular season," Nord said.
After last season 9-3 slate, climaxed by upsetting Wisconsin in the Hall of Fame Bowl, a good crowd should be on hand for the scrimmage. A big crowd would not surprise Nord, who was a tight end on the Wildcats' '77 10-1 squad.
"The great UK fans we have. . .nothing would surprise me. The fans are already looking forward to next season."
Coach Jerry Claiborne wasn't too happy with last Saturday's scrimmage at Shively. The offense lost seven fumbles during the cold and windy afternoon.
"We've got a long way to go in order to be as good as we were last year," said Claiborne. "Our defense wasn't as good as it looked. Our running game was destroyed by all those fumbles.

UK attorney John Darsie said UK would retain approval on the buildings' design and would have "extensive involvement" in the operation and management of the complex.
Officials would not put a price tag on the project, other than to say it would be several million dollars. Some say the price could go as high as $6 to 58 million.
Bowie Goes Wild Against Lakers
Rookie Sam Bowie played one of his finest games as a professional Sunday when the former Kentucky Ail-American poured home 21 points and grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for his Portland Trail Blazers as the Los Angeles Lakers won 135-133 in overtime.
The Lakers jumped out to a 40-25 first period lead, but Portland fought back and narrowed the deficit to six at the half.
It was in the final period when Bowie came alive offensively to score five points in the final 46 seconds to send the game into overtime. With 0:25 left in regulation, Bowie hit the first of a pair of free throws, then grabbed the rebound of his second attempt and put it back in on a double-pump to tie the game at 124.
Bowie was 8 of 16 from the field and 5 of 10 from the free throw line for his 21 points. Eleven of his 20 rebounds were on the offensive boards. He also had two steals in 39 minutes of action.
