research, patient care and injury prevention of athletes.
Such a program would be patterned after the famed Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. That clinic treats a large percentage of the nation's collegiate and professional athletes who suffer athletics-related injuries.
At the present time, the board has only agreed to seek proposals from the private sector to develop and operate the program. Private funding would go toward construction of a 60-to 100-bed hospital. No state money will be involved.
Kentucky coaches believe it will be a tremendous recruiting aide for all UK sports and enable the University to offer athletes the finest in treatment facilities as well as providing treatment to other athletes around the country.
If the project is successful, don't be surprised if Dr. James Andrews is one of the key figures in the new program. He is regarded as one of the nation's best in dealing with athletics-related injuries.
Three years ago, in the midst of the controversy surrounding the sudden absence of LSU football on WWL Radio in New Orleans, a 50,000-watt clear channel station, we warned readers that UK's long marriage with WHAS Radio in Louisville might someday be in jeopardy.
It's not only in jeopardy, the marriage has gone the way of most other marriages today, in opposite directions. No longer will Wildcat fans turn to 840 on the radio dial for the Big Blue. When you turn there this fall all you will get is the Red Rage of Louisville.
Why? It just isn't a simple answer. Too many people are telling too many different versions for a simple finger of blame.
The Kentucky network, which owns radio rights to UK football and basketball broadcasts, says it tried to negotiate a new contract with WHAS,

Hopefully we won't make the same mistake we did a few years ago with our football program, by looking for a big name coach who doesn't understand Kentucky basketball. Only when we brought one of "our boys" back as football coach did our program begin to move in the right direction.
Let's keep it in the family as there are plenty of Kentucky boys well qualified, such as Pat Riley, Dan Issel, Kyle Macy, etc. etc.

but claims WHAS management wasn't willing to negotiate. WHAS, on the other hand, claims it thought the negotiating process was still active when it learned that Kentucky Network had signed a new Louisville affiliate, WAVG, to a contract several days ago.
WHAS says it still wants to carry UK games, although the station has a recent history of dumping long-standing sports programs (such as Kentucky-Indiana All-Star game, major league baseball all-star game and the Kentucky State High School Basketball Tourney).
Plus, there has been the reported nudging of Louisville officials to give top billing to the Cardinals. A couple years ago, Louisville switched to WHAS for its broadcasts and when there was a conflict with UK games, the UL games have been put on WHAS' sister FM station.
There are rumors that this arrangement hasn't met well with new UL football coach Howard Schnellen-berger. Howie, according to one source, wants WHAS to feature all games. WHAS says UL has made no such demands.
Another report making the rounds is that WHAS may try to buy the UK rights back from WAVG in time for the UK football and basketball seasons this fall, but that isn't likely to happen because WAVG's coupe has been a tremendous morale booster to that station's employees.
WAVG general manager Ed Henson told The Louisville Courier-Journal last week, "I was brought up in Fern Creek and I have Fern Creek blook and I enjoy a good fight. I'd lie down on Spaghetti Junction to get UK." For those of you unfamiliar with Spaghetti Junction, that just happens to be the busiest highway intersection this side of Los Angeles.
Regardless of fault, there are going to be many thousands of UK fans who may not be able to follow the Cats this year. Kentucky Network officials say the games will be broadcast over
50,000-watt WCKY (Cincinnati), but that isn't a clear-channel station like WHAS. One official said 50,000-watt clear channel WLW Radio (Cincinnati) may be added in 1986 and that would offset the loss of WHAS.
Still, Eddie Sutton's old friends and relatives back in western Kansas won't get to do what Eddie did when he was growing up as a little boy, and that is to follow the Cats on WHAS.

HITS AND MISSES. . .One of the hottest topics around these days is how many season tickets will be controlled by new basketball coach Eddie Sutton. UK president Otis Singletary told reporters last week UK has looked into the allotment of tickts to both Joe B. Hall and Jerry Claiborne to see if their allotments are in line with those of coaches at other schools. Another UK administrator said Sutton's numbers may be reduced as much as 80 percent from those controlled by Hall. The Louisville Courier-Journal reported that UK officials had looked into a complaint which said large numbers of tickets to Hall resulted in allegations of abuses in making allocations. The newspaper said it had obtained lists of ticket-holders for both Hall and Claiborne under the state's open records law. It further reported that Joe Hall controlled 322 seats in Rupp Arena and Claiborne 861 tickets at Commonwealth Stadium. Singletary said he instructed athletics director Cliff Hagan to check into allegations from an anonymous letter earlier which claimed that some basketball tickets were being brokered for more than the face value. Singletary said Hagan's inquiry turned up no evidence of irregular payments being made to anyone for the tickets. . .The NCAA rules committee has voted to adopt the 45-second clock for the entire game of all college games next season and will also be used in post season play. That was expected, but a new twist on an intentional foul was a real surprise. Starting next season, a player who is

coach Rupp and the Cats. I caught Wildcat fever at an early age and will be a loyal UK fan for life.
I would like to say a few words on a couple of subjects, so please excuse the length of my letter.
First, I want to berate all parties responsible for the problems that will cause radio WHAS to no longer broadcast UK basketball and football games. I have relatives in Florida who lived in the great state of Kentucky for many years. They are loyal UK fans and cheered the Cats on with Ralph and Cawood faithfully. They have now been cheated of this pleasure by so-called business. This is but one example. I am sure there are thousands of others.
Secondly, in your issue of 4-6-85 I have a point concerning the "Wildcat Quiz" question 4 is "True or False? UK doesn't have a player from the state of Tennessee on its current roster. You give the correct answer as
true. On page 97 of TCP Kentucky
Basketball Yearbook it states that
Richard Madison is from Memphis,
Tennessee and was selected the best
player in that state. Nobody's perfect.
Joe B. Hall, you were a great coach
and more importantly a fine christian
man who was concerned with his
players as people first. God bless you t-------------------
fouled intentionally while in the act of shooting will get two free throws, plus his team will get the ball out-of-bounds. If the field goal attempt is good, the player will get one free throw instead of two. . .No, 6-11 Arkansas freshman star Andrew Lang will not be coming to Kentucky. Coacb Eddie Sutton said he was only joking last week when, in response to a reporter's question, Eddie said he would welcome Lang with open arms if he wanted to transfer to UK. Sutton also said he would not take any high school seniors who had been recruited by him at Arkansas. Sutton said he used Arkansas funds in recruiting the youngsters and that they should stay a Razorback. . .The new video tapes of past UK football highlights will be available to the public within the next couple weeks according to Bill Wester and John Sayer of Sports Video Highlight, Inc. The football tape will cover 100 years of UK football history and will sell for $49.95 each and will be narrated by popular sportscaster Tom Hammond. You can obtain information by writing: Box 2168, Lexington, Kentucky 40597. . .Names last week as Kentucky's Mr. Basketball for the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star games were Louisville Seneca's great Tony Kimbro. He was a landslide winner over Marshall County's Barry Goheen. . . It should be some kind of a battle for the honors next year with such stars as Scott County's Frank Persley, Eastern's Felton Spencer, and Highlands' Scott Draud all chasing Owensboro Apollo's Rex Chapman. . .UK's first scrimmage of football spring practice was one contending with fierce wind gusts but coach Jerry Claiborne was still pleased with the passing of quarterbacks Bill Ransdell, Tim Jones, Kevin Dooley and Bill Allen. The four combined for 12 of 19 passes from the air while redshirt freshmen Anthony Gardner and Ivy Joe Hunter rushed for 82 and 38 yards respectively. Mark Higgs's knee injury obviously creates new room in the backfield for someone with an outstanding spring. . .
and yours. Coach Sutton, me and all other loyal UK fans wish you the best of luck and will be behind you all the way.
Sincerely,
Dan Poole Louisville, Ky.
