     Biographical note 
 Frances Barton Fox was born January 19, 1887 to Frances Barton and Fontaine Talbot Fox in Bullit County, Kentucky. Frances Barton Fox was the second eldest of five siblings. One year after her birth, her family relocated to Louisville.  In 1894, her mother died due to complications after the birth of her fifth child. The children were primarily raised by their father. Frances Barton Fox became a novelist, best known for her story,  The Heart of Arethusa , written in 1918. Her novel  Ridgeways , was published using her pen name, Frances Renard. In additin to her novels, Frances Barton Fox wrote poetry and short stories. She lived primarily in New York, but returned to Louisville where she died in 1967. Her brother, Fontaine T. Fox, was a successful cartoonist, with comics published daily in the  Chicago Tribune  from 1908 through the 1920s.      Scope and Contents 
 The Frances Barton Fox papers (dated circa 1918-1967; 2.9 cubic feet; 6 boxes, 1 folder) comprise the author's manuscript writings of her poetry, short stories, and novels. The collection also includes the original draft of  Ridgeways , which was cut considerably before publication at the request of Fox's publisher. Her most well known work,  The Heart of Arethusa , published in 1918, is not included in the collection.
