UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY — LEIHNGTON CAMPUS
FALL 1991
FACT BOOK DEFINITIONS
ACADEMIC YEAR
For enrollment, the academic year is the time period containing the academic sessions held during consecutive Fall and Spring terms and 4
and 8 week summer sessions. For degrees awarded, the academic year is the time period between July 1st and June 30th.
ACT
American College Test.
AVERAGE FULL-TIME TEACHING FACULTY SALARIES I
The mean faculty salary reported here is based on a nine month contract and is taken from the annual AAUP Faculty Salary Survey. To
convert a salary from a twelve month contract to a nine month contract, multiply by 9 and divide by 11. This compensates for 1 month of
paid vacation.
CHE
Commonwealth of Kentucky, Council on Higher Education.
DEGREES AWARDED
The source for degrees awarded is the CHE/IPEDS degrees awarded tape and represents degrees awarded during the period beginning July
1 and ending June 30.
DISTRIBUTION OF EFFORT '
Distribution of Effort figures for the colleges and departments are taken from the summary reports produced by the computing center from
, the Monitored Workload System. These averages represent the percentages in the data base as of 10/2/91 for the College of Agriculture and V
10/1/91 for the rest of the Lexington Campus.

FACULTY FI‘E
I Information for this section of the report was taken from the four year comparison report compiled by the Office of the Assistant Chancellor
I using the Position Budget System (PBS) subcode summary report. The FI‘E represents the number of budgeted positions in the department
‘ or college, not the number of people employed (in Student/Faculty Ratio Table).
FISCAL YEAR
The 12-month period from July 1 through the following June 30.
FI‘E ENROLLMENTS (FALL)
FI‘E enrollment is calculated based on credit hours taught by courses in the department. See Student/Faculty Ratio below for formulae. The
source for FI‘E enrollment is the Production Tabulation report.
TEACHING FACULTY VS. PERSONS WITH FACULTY RANK
Teaching faculty in this report represent those in the annual AAUP Faculty Salary Survey. Faculty included in this survey are limited to those
full-time faculty whose teaching responsibilities are at least fifty percent instruction and are on an active payroll status. This does not apply
to the College of Agriculture where all people with faculty rank with the exception of administrators are included. Therefore, not all persons
with faculty rank such as administrators, etc., are included in these numbers. EEO faculty numbers will differ from AAUP faculty numbers
because EEO numbers include faculty with administrative duties.
GENERAL AND RESTRICTED FUNDS
The University of Kentucky’s original Operating Budget Summary is the source for this information.
General funds are defined as all fund group 01 (general) accounts. However, for the College of Agriculture, the following fund groups have
been used: 01 (general), 02 (general designated), and 20-29 (general land grant, years 0-9). Totals for the Lexington Campus include fund
groups 01 (general), 02 (general designated), and 20-29 (general land grant, years 0-9). In this report, general funds include fringe benefits,
as well as income supported accounts. ,
Restricted funds consists of fund group 11 (restricted private) and does not include endowment income. -
IPEDS '
Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System. A federal government reporting system.
(Cour—ed...)

(Pal [”1 Fad Book Definitio- - continued)
MAJORS (FALL)
Major enrollment includes headcount majors by level at the opening of the fall term for the appropriate year. For example, the fall 1990
academic year data is shown in the 1990-91 fiscal year. These numbers represent the same official enrollments as reported to state and federal
agencies. Source of the information for this section of the report is the CIIE/IPEDS enrollment tapes.
PRIVATE GIVING
College private giving information was obtained from the Lexington Campus Development Office and is compiled by calendar, not fiscal, year.
Data reported for fiscal year 1990-91 is actually calendar year 1990; and for fiscal year 1989-90, the 1989 calendar year data is shown. Private
giving information by department is not available.
STUDENT CREDIT HOURS
Number of credits per course multiplied by the number of students enrolled in the course.
STUDENT/FACULTY RATIO
Faculty FI‘E is the sum of the following formula: '
number of full-time faculty (object code=1101)
+ funds for teaching assistants (object code=l301) -:— ave. dept. faculty salary
+ funds for part-time instructors (object code=1110) + ave. dept. faculty salary
For the College of Agriculture, the student/faculty ratio uses the number of budgeted faculty in the instructional departments only (FRS
department codes beginning with 8A).
Student FI‘E calculation uses the following formulae:
undergraduate student credit hours + 16 = 1 FIE
1 graduate student hours —:- 12 = 1 FTE . _
I students taking 769 only = 1 FTE
= the College of Law FI‘E equals the actual headcount.
_ ‘ Student/faculty ratios are taken from the annual report generated by the office of the Assistant Chancellor for Lexington Campus. ‘
