Author, College president, Editor. Rust, born February 14, 1819, in Logan County, Kentucky had a limited early education due to the poor circumstances of his parents. Through great perseverance he became a thorough, self-made scholar. He taught at Mt. Carmel Academy and served as its president from 1840 to 1844. Subsequently he was in charge of the Academy, at Springfield, the Clarksville (Tennessee) Female Academy and the Lafayette Female Institute. Rust was a prominent Baptist layperson, and after serving on the faculty, was president of Bethel College in Russellville, Kentucky. From 1869 to 1971, he served as co-editor, with R. M. Dudley, of the Western Recorder. In addition to his newspaper work, Rust wrote numerous essays on various subjects including religion, science and literature.
This is a copy of Rust's autobiography, which contains many comments on the history of education in western Kentucky.
