A native of Greensburg, Ky, Hobson went into business with his father, William, an owner of steamers and a merchant. He joined the army and served as a lieutenant during the war with Mexico from 1846-1847. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Union Army. He became a Brigadier General whose most famous exploit was the pursuit of General John Hunt Morgan nearly 900 miles through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio during Morgan's 1863 raid. While he did not receive the surrender of Morgan and his command, Hobson captured five guns and 575 men. After the war, Hobson continued his business interests in lumber, real estate, and merchandise, and was named Collector of Internal Revenue of the Fourth District by President Ulysses S. Grant. He was active in various veterans' organizations, including the Mexican War veterans and the Veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic. The collection consists of a micofilm copy of a letterbook, account books and clippings concerning the career of Edward H. Hobson. It includes  letters to Abraham Lincoln and military officers during the Civil War, clippings about Hobson, and Hobson's account book. There are also letters concerning the Association of Accounting Officers and Agents of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in the first part of the twentieth century.
