6.    LEADING MATHEMATICIAN VISITS CAMPUS

      Dr. Richard Bellman, University of Southern California faculty member who
is described by many of his contemporaries as America's leading mathematician,
was the principal speaker November 21-22 at the University's annual Institute for
Theoretical and Applied Mechanics0 Former chief mathematician for the Rand Cor-
poration, Dr. Bellman now is professor of mathematics9 engineering and medicine
at U0SC0 His three lectures before UK audiences dealt generally with the
extension of mathematical analysis to living organisms,



7.    UNIVERSITY SALUTES TVA ENGINEER

      A Tennessee Valley Authority engineer has been designated by the Department
of Civil Engineering as recipient of its current alumnus of the month award0 Mr.
Floyd P. Lacy, Jr., of Knoxville, Tenn,, accepted the citation at a recent meeting
of the UK student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers,

      Mr, Lacy, who received his civil engineering degree here in 1939, currently
directs hydro-project design activities for TVA, He is a member of the International
Committee on Large Dams and is the author of several publications on dam construction,



80    KPA TO CONTINUE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

      The Kentucky Press Association has announced that it will continue its program
of schloarship assistance to University journalism students. The scholarships pro-
vide each recipient $100 per semester and are renewable at the option of the KPA
scholarship committee for as long as the student meets requirements of the Department
of Journalism.

      Applications should be directed to Mr. Jack Viehman, Kentucky Press Association,
107 Journalism Building, Accompanying each application should be a statement of the
student's academic record, outside activities and professional ambitions, and supporting
letters from either the high school principal, in the case of entering freshmen, or a
journalism instructor,
