quantities of barium are present in Kentucky tobacco and
also in other plants, and further that a part of this may be
extracted from the dry plant by means of water. This sug-
gests that the barium present in plant tissue is not altogether
in the form of inert sulfate, but that some of it is present in
soluble and more active form, and that, therefore, this ele- ·
1 ment may play some part in the mineral metabolism of the
. plant.
? As heretofore, the work of this Department has included
i analyses of a large number of soils, minerals, rocks, various
i crops and other agricultural materials, from various localities
in the State. The following is a brief summary of the num-
