y A of preservation, for the reason that it is wellknown to biolo- a
gists that parasites never _entirely destroy their hosts, and I
. , , at best serve only as checks and balances. The parasites of i;
; 1 the San Jose scale will undoubtedly prove helpful, but San d
:1 Jose scale nevertheless is by no means a thing of the past. I
I _ DEPARTMENT OF EXTENSION. In its original conception, i
gi l the purpose of the Agricultural Experiment Station is, as its t
‘ name indicates, to carry on such investigations and to con- E
, duct such experiments as are likely to prove helpful to agri- 6
. culture. It is one thing,,however, to discover new truth, and
quite another thing to disseminate it along channels where li
g‘·?° it may prove most helpful. It came gradually to be recog- Ii
nized, therefore, that a distinct branch or department of the
Experiment Station service was needed in.order to carry to l
` the individual farmer and into the very heart of the rural 9
community, the valuable results of Experiment Station work. t
A department of agricultural extension work was, therefore, h
organized a few years ago and is today, one of the mostl S
eminently helpful and useful branches of the work of the D
Experiment Station. Its activities are far-reaching and ll
either directly or indirectly include nearly every phase of our t
agricultural progress and development. Among these various E
activities, the following may be enumerated: H
  1. Fcw·1ners’ Week. Each year during the first week in
January, since the organization of the Extension Department, A 0
there has been held a series of meetings known as Farmers tl
» _ Week. The exercises of this week include the annual con- a
ventions of the Sheep, Swine, Dairy Cattle, Beef Cattle and
Horse Breeders’» Associations, the State Horticultural Society Z
and the Kentucky Corn Growers’ Association; also the State
Dairy Show and the State Corn Show. Speakers of national I
reputation have been secured for each of these conventions 3
