Memories To Ponder During Off-Season
.While The Future Holds Many Questions
As another school year comes to a close this month, followers of the University of Kentucky can now rest for a while. During these lazy days of summer Big Blue fans can sit back and recall many of the events which took place during the 1985-86 session. Good or bad those memories seem like only yesterday.
Reminiscing Last Season's Events
With your favorite beverage in hand and relaxing by the pool, beach, or underneath an Oak Tree while reminiscing during the off-season you might remember being . . .
Nick Nicholas
Cats' Pause Columnist
. . .confused with the somewhat bold predictions of how strong the football Wildcats would be in '85. . .and then watching the unforeseen problems occur as the schedule progressed, resulting in a dismal 5-6 season.
. . .stunned when Brian McClure led his Bowling Green Falcons to a last-minute touchdown, resulting in a 30-26 upset conquest of Kentucky. . .
. . .surprised with Don Weber's lady cross country team capturing an SEC championship with four freshmen runners.
. . .over-anxious while waiting day by day for Eddie Sutton's official debut as Wildcat coach to become a reality. . .
. . .ignorant to why two sneaker organizations (Nike and Converse) were causing such an uproar in Kentucky.
. . .in pain with Mark Higgs while he was trying to regain his form of old after undergoing extensive surgery to repair his injured knee.
. . .in disblief when Higgs, that 5-foot-7 bundle of energy, would score two touchdowns, the second TD coming in the final two minutes, to help UK narrowly defeat Tulane.
. . .happy when Kentucky racked up four consecutive victories to raise its grid slate to an impressive 4-1 mark.
. . .upset with Kentucky, not to mention the inventor of the television set, as the Wildcats proceeded to lose to LSU (shown by ESPN) and Georgia (WTBS) during back-

to-back weekends. Jerry Claiborne's 'Cats were 0-4 on national cable TV in '85.
. . .speechless when hearing of the Herald-Leader's allegations directed at the University of Kentucky basketball team for illegal payments during the Joe B. Hall era.
. . .embarrassed to wear anything blue after UK's humiliating 42-0 setback at Commonwealth Stadium to the Big Orange of Tennessee.
. . .glad that the end of November means the end of football season and the beginning of basketball.
. . .somewhat puzzled because this new coach started three guards instead of the usual two.
. . .jubulant with victories over arch-rivals Indiana and Louisville. . . .saddened with the death of Ann Crowley, an AP writer who covered the Kentucky Wildcats.
Cedric Jenkins
Derrick Miller
. . .impressed with the opening of the S700,000-plus Hilary J. Boone Indoor Tennis Center.
. . .mystified after a behind-the-back maneuver by 5-foot-5 Leroy Byrd against Alabama.
. . .hot-under-the-collar while Kenny Walker was double- and sometimes triple-teamed around the basket.
. . .overwhelmed and elated as Walker, Winston Bennett and Roger Harden helped lead UK to an SEC regular season title and a tournament championship.
. . .drained after the Wildcats played LSU for the fourth time, which resulted in elimination of a Kentucky ballclub that won 32 of 36 battles.
. . .relieved that Eddie Sutton signed Derrick Miller to go along with November signees Rex Chapman and Reeeie Hanson.
. . . curious where will Harvey Grant play college ball next season? Is he the next version of Tito Horford?
. . .dormant because you've spent the last eight months trying to keep up with Wildcat sports.
Things To Keep An Eye Out For During 1986-87
After going over last season's accomplishments and disappointments you might find yourself wondering about 1986-87. Certainly, there are many things to think about. . .
. . .the college atmosphere in the air when you hear On, On UofK for the first time after a four-month layoff.
. . .will Bill Ransdell have a good or bad senior campaign?
. . .new potential. With the addition of Kentucky student/athletes like Al Baker (football), Donna Combs (cross country), Rex Chapman (basketball) the future looks bright for Kentucky sports.
. . .will the Kentucky-Louisville hoop series be continued?
. . .more improvement in the minor sports programs at the university. After successful seasons during this past campaign for example, women's cross country, gymnastics, tennis and golf; and men's tennis and golf you may begin to see more followers for these and other minor athletic programs. One thing is for sure, this past season UK's minor sports programs have taken a step in the right direction.
. . .anticipation for the initial tailgate party of the season outside Commonwealth Stadium.
. . .if Cedric Jenkins is ready for a starting assignment.
. . .if this is the year that coach Terry Hall and the Lady Kats will have the season they are capable of having.
. . .will Sean Sutton decide to join his father at Kentucky?
. . .Keith Madison's Bat Cats which direction are they headed, north or south?
. . Joe Worley. Is this the year he breaks the 52-yard UK record?
. . .Winston Bennett. Will he be double- and triple-teamed like Walker was?
. . .Dwane Casey. What a fine addition he will be to the Kentucky Wildcats.
. . .cross country signee Donna Combs. Potentially she may be a better runner than Rex Chapman is as a basketball player or Al Baker as a football player.
. . .the three-point goal. Can Kentucky's guards be effective from 19' 9"?
. . .night games at Commonwealth Stadium.
. . .will anything ever become of the H-L's allegations? If so, what actions will the NCAA inflict on the UK program?
. . .how good is the Kentucky backfield?
. . .and, then again how inexperienced is its offensive line?
. . .Eddie Sutton, along with graduate assistant Roger Harden, discussing strategy for a last-second shot.
. . .reliving the '86-87 Wildcat year while relaxing in the shade during a pleasant summer day.
