Technical Fouls Subdue Cincy's Last-Ditch Effort To Get Back In Game; Ed, Rex & Company Too Much For Bearcats As Kentucky Rolls 101-77
\\\ Jim KaskTwood
University of Cincinnati basketball coach Tony Yates escaped from the box twice against the Kentucky Wildcats.
But in the end, the Bearcats couldn't escape the magic of guard Ed Davender, who led the Wildcats to an impressive 101-77 victory before 22,865 at Rupp Arena.
The Bearcats of Tony Yates were no Hawaii to Eddie Sutton's talented group of basketeers. Kentucky found Cincy a different breed of 'Cat. . .very bearish.
Too bearish, it seems, for officials Don Rutledge. Mac Chauvin and Frank Ourso.
They called 31 fouls on the Bearcats and 21 on Kentucky. Kentucky hit on 35 of 41 from the line to 12 of 21 for Cincy.
However, uh. . .technically, it was a call on Yates-actually two of themthat destroyed the momentum by the Bearcats with about 6:42 left in the game.
Kentucky was in control 81-63 following a short jumper by Cedric Jenkins. But then muscular pivot Cedric Glover, hobbled by fouls early, hit a free throw. Keith Starks sank a short jumper following a steal by EInardo Givens. It was Glover again who went over 6-11 Rob Lock for a short jumper to make it 82-68 with 5:28 left.
After surfing past Hawaii the Wildcats suddenly found themselves facing some pretty tall trees from across the River.
Things began to look a shade darker for Kentucky when a pass intended for Davender was deflected out of bounds.
Rutledge signaled Cincy's ball, then reversed himself after a consultation with Chauvin. This brought Yates steaming out of the coach's box. And he was promptly hit with a technical.
Easy Ed Made Things Hard On Cincinnati
The cool Davender then started nailing the lid shut on the Bearcats and Yates.
He hit one of the techs, then cashed in a twisting Iayup. Winston Bennett did likewise. Then the son of Sutton, Sean, meshed a 20-footer with the crowd
urging him to "shoot. . .shoot" to make it 8(>-6S.
And then Yates escaped from the box again. And he was nailed again.
This time Davender sank both techs and Lock followed with a Iayup and it was 93-68 Kentucky. Consider the Bearcats de-clawed.
The irrepressible Glover said it was more like facing a 2-3-3 zone out there at times instead of the vaunted Kentucky man defense.
The 2-3-3 zone? Well, that's five players and. in this case, three officials.
"Getting into foul trouble early for three of us really hurt." said Glover. "Some of the calls were terrible calls. Do they watch me. or something, or is it my physical play? I asked the ref before the game to just let us play. But it doesn't always work out that way."
Glover, Calvin Phiffer and Ronnie Ellison had three fouls each in the first half, with Levertis Robinson eventually fouling out late in the game.
Glover managed to come back and lead the Bearcats with 22 points, finding Lock playing a bit tentative on his patented jumpers.
But Glover, flashing a big smile in the post-game interviews, said Kentucky had a very good team.
But are they No. 2, Cedric?
"Well," said Glover, laughing, "(they're) a pretty good team. I wouldn't say No. 2. But I think the crowd does have an effect on the ref making some certain calls."
But Yates, despite his two techs for leaving the box. wouldn't necessarily buy what his young star Glover was feeding the press.
"Well, out of the mouths of. . .what is he? Nineteen? Well, I wouldn't accept what he says as an expert opinion. But I would accept mine."
Yates laughed. Then he turned to officiating.
"Officials are human beings," said Yates. "They make mistakes, like we all do. They made some tonight. They reversed some calls. You tend to hope the mistakes balance out but I didn't like the fact he (Rutledge) reversed his call."
Yates, however, was pleased with the way his Bearcats fought back late in the second half. 4
"1 felt good about the team coming back," said Yates. "I hated for it (the tech) to happen. It broke our momentum. But I'm a positive thinker and we came here with a positive vision."
Chapman Got 'Cats Started On Right Foot
Rex Chapman, who finished with 22 points, got the Wildcats rolling early to record their second win of the season.
The Ownensboro Wonder had a lot of middle-of-the-game help from Bennett (17 points, seven rebounds), Lock (18 points, 13 boards) and LeRon Ellis, who had 11 points in nine minutes of work.
But the real key was Davender. In fact, as far as Yates is con-
cerned, Davender will be the only key to unlock future doors of opportunity for Kentucky.
"He's the leader of their basketball team," said Yates of the 6-foot-2 senior from Brooklyn, N.Y.
"He leads on the floor. . .he sets the tempo, passes up shots and gets the ball to other people. He looks to others all the time. And he plays defense."
Does he ever.
The Davender "D" did in All-Metro guard Roger McClendon.
McClendon made just one of nine field goals in the first half and three of 14 for the game.
Credit "Captain Marvel" for this inept performance.
With his goggles on, Davender gives a pretty fair imitation of the comic book character. Indeed, his hands are quicker than most people's eyesespecially those of Roger The Dodger.
Davender swiped one ball from McClendon early in the game that Yates said had a far-reaching effect on his player.
"We expect a certain performance from Roger and expect him to do certain things," said Yates. "But Davender did a great job on him. And that steal early hurt Roger a little bit."
Davender also does a lot of things that don't show up in the scorebook. For example, when the hot-tempered Ellis gets called for a foul and blows his cool, who is there to settle him down by lightly grabbing his shirt and talking to him. . .gently? Easy Ed. of course.
Yates, like Glover, was also impressed with Davender's supporting cast.
"They have great starters and a good bench," said Yates. "They're physical and do a lot of things with the transition game. As a team, they are a very good basketball team."
Other pluses for the Wildcats this Tuesday night were the continued fine floor play of freshmen Eric Manuel and Ellis.
Manuel had six points, one rebound and one steal in 13 minutes while Ellis got his 11 by hitting five of eight from the field. He 1 also hit one of two from the line while pulling down two rebounds and having one blocked shot.
"He (Ellis) is going to be a pro player before he's through," said Yates. "I don't know if he will eventually start this year. Let Eddie decide that."
