     Biographical note 
 William Elsey Connelley (March 15, 1855-June 1930) was born in Johnson County, Kentucky. Despite being self-educated, he worked as a schoolteacher in Johnson County from 1872-1880. In 1880, he moved to Wyanotte, Kansas where he worked as a farmer, teacher, lawyer and businessman. After developing an interest in historical research, Connelley wrote a number of historical texts and became president of the Kansas State Historical Society in 1912. He went on to serve as its secretary from 1914 till his death in 1930. Connelley's published works include  The Provisional Government of Nebraska Territory  (1899),  Life of John J. Ingalls  (1903),  Quantrill and the Border Wars  (1909),  Eastern Kentucky Papers  (1910),  Life of Preston Plumb  (1913),  History of Kansas  (1917),  History of Kentucky  (1922) and  Indian Myths  (1928). Connelley continued to write and publish historical and anthropological books and journal articles throughout his life.
