 United States--History--Civil War, 1861-1865--Regimental histories

The 26th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at Owensboro, Kentucky from July through November 1861. The 26th battled Confederate forces in southern Kentucky, notably at the Battle of Woodbury on October 29, 1861. It was mustered into Federal service at Nashville, Tennessee on March 5, 1862 and saw action shortly after in the Battle of Shiloh. The 26th returned to Kentucky by barge while guarding prisoners of war. The regiment was then ordered to guard the rail lines in and around Russellville, Kentucky, a Confederate stronghold. The 26th was mustered out of Federal service July 10, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky after returning from North Carolina.

The 26th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Photographic Collection, 1861-1865 consists of eleven albumen cartes de visite of soldiers that served with the 26th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry (Union) during the Civil War. Many of the men pictured are identified in handwritten ink by an unknown person or agency.
