Nearly every Kentuckian has fond memories of sitting around a radio on a cold winter night, living and dying with the fortunes of the Big Blue.
As usual, the excitement and action of Kentucky's 90th season of basketball will be broadcast to tans across the country on the largest college basketball network in the nation. The network once again includes clear-channel WHAS in Louisville, 840 on the AM dial.
The broadcast rights to Wildcats basketball are held by Host Communications, Inc., of Lexington.
Ralph Hacker
Ralph Hacker enters his first season on the UK Radio Network as play-byplay announcer this fall. Hacker slides over from the color commentary duties to play-by-play, filling the void left by his long-time broadcast partner, Cawood Ledford, who retired after 39 years as UK's "Voice of the Wildcats."
Hacker, who is in his 21st year on the UK Radio Network, will call the play-by-play action on the UK Radio Network for Kentucky's games. The past three years, Hacker split time as play-by-play announcer on the UK Television Network and will be the play-byplay announcer for live televised games this season on the UK Television Network.
Hacker, president and general manager of Lexington radio station WVLK AM/FM, will also handle the Rick Pitino pregame and postgame shows. Last season, Hacker served as co-host with Rob Bromley on the Bill Curry and Rick Pitino television shows.
In addition to his experience on the UK Radio and Television Networks, Hacker has ventured into network television during the past eight years. He has called football and basketball games for Jefferson-Pilot, ESPN, the NCAA and CBS.
Charlie McAlexander
On March 24, 1992, Charlie McAlexander became the newest member of the University of Kentucky sports broadcast team and the first Southeastern Conference radio broadcaster in history to work for three different SEC schools.
McAlexander, 46, filled the vacancy opened by the retirement of legendary broadcaster Cawood Ledford, who stepped down at the end of the 1992 basketball season. McAlexander, known to all as "Charlie Mac," is employed by Host Communications.
McAlexander, a native of Holly Springs, Miss., worked the past 13 years as the play-by-play voice of the Vanderbilt Radio Network as well as the host and producer of the Vanderbilt coaches' shows.
