[Identification of item], Guerrant family papers, 1850-1912, 1861-1865 (bulk dates), 1FM-95, Special Collections, University of Kentucky. Dr. Edward Owings Guerrant, a native of Mt. Sterling, Ky, graduated from the Belleville Hospital College in New York City. He served as John Hunt Morgan's adjutant general during the Civil War, and his service with Morgan took him into the Appalachian region for the first time. After the war, he returned to Mt. Sterling with his wife, and, after a "miraculous" cure from a serious illness, determined to attend a seminary and become a minister. He soon returned to Appalachia and founded churches, schools, missions and orphanages. He held medical clinics during the two-hour recesses in his church meetings. His son, Edward Putney Guerrant, also studied medicine and practiced in the mountains. He founded the Guerrant Mission Clinic Hospital in Winchester during the 1920's in memory of his father. This is a collection on microfilm of Guerrant family papers, most belonging to Edward Owings Guerrant, a physician, minister and Confederate officer. The papers for the most part concern Guerrant's Civil War service. Included are entries from Guerrant's diary, correspondence, and general orders. There are a few letters from John Hunt Morgan. Parts of a letter book and an order book are in the collection also. There are some handbills advertising Guerrant's book, HISTORY OF THE KENTUCKY SOLDIERS, along with subscriber lists. Other materials include articles which appeared in Christian periodicals around 1912 concerning Guerrant's work in Appalachia. There is also a diary kept during the 1850's by H.E. Geurrant (possibly Edward Owings' father), much of it devoted to his grief over the death of his wife, Mary. Not arranged. Guerrant, Edward O. (Edward Owings), 1838-1916. Guerrant, H. E.--Diaries.
