Coach Eddie Sutton's Postgame Comments
Following are Coach Eddie Sutton's postgame comments after Kentucky defeated East Carolina 86-52 in first round action of the UKIT:
Question: Your comments on the game?
Sutton: "I thought we opened the ballgame and played very well. We went through 'death valley' there for a little while; I didn't think we were ever going to score a field goal. There was at least ten minutes (first half) where we didn't score a field goal. Then just before the half we came back and played very well again. Most of our points in the first half came off our defense or at the free throw line. We didn't execute very well, offensively in the second half we played much better; we -oke the game open. If we can play 40 minutes like we played at times (tonight) then we could be a good basketball team. We're happy to win the ballgame and you certainly have to give East Carolina credit. They scrapped very hard for the first 20 minutes of

JAMES BLACKMON
(About his shooting)
Blackmon: The biggest thing is confidence and putting it up. I've been shooting for a long time. I feel like I can shoot, so I've just got to keep my confidence up. (About if he had lost his touch) Blackmon: Well, it isn't that I've lost it. . .I've just had a couple of bad games. I missed a couple of shots that I felt I could have made. When you start worrying about that. . .I've just got to keep it out of mind.
put it to us. It doesn't show class for either one of our teams. That's something I'm just going to have to shy away from. (About his outside shooting) Bennett: Under Coach (Joe) Hall I was relied on for a lot of inside play. Coming back this year Coach Sutton put us all on a weight program and I was able to strengthen my knee. I feel more confident about my jump. (About the reserves scoring) Bennett: We always feel enthusiastic when our starling five can come out and give our reserves a chance to play.

ROGER HARDEN
(About the game)
Harden: We knew what they were going to do prior to the game, especially when they isolated on (Dwayne) Polee. He's a great
(About his whole game)
Blackmon: I'm just trying to concentrate on the whole game. If I can concentrate on defense my offense will come around. (About preparing for a game) Blackmon: Well. I try to go out and play hard and give a 100 percent everytime. If the shots fall then that's better for me. The first shot helps a lot. it gets your confidence up.
WINSTON BENNETT
(About the scuffle)
Bennett: I think that was just a matter of two teams going out and playing tough and emotional. East Carolina was not going to roll over and play dead; they were going to come out and
the ballgame. I'm very happy for the young man on my left here (James Blackmon); he's starting to hit some outside shots, but there is a reason for that he's worked very hard this week on his perimeter shooting. Believe me, he felt that he could hit the perimeter shot tonight. Winston (Bennett) did a great job, as always, defensively. He did a super job on the boards for us.
Question: Was the team lulled into a false sense of security once it got its early lead?
Sutton: I didn't see the first ballgame but maybe that can happen to you sometimes when you get ahead too far, too fast. (SMU erased a 17-point Pepperdine lead before losing in overtime). But again, you have to give credit to the other ballclubs. They didn't roll over and die. But we certainly did a poor job during that stretch of getting good shots off the offense. Our defense kept us in the ballgame.
ballplayer. They were trying to get a lot of offense out of him. but I think Eddie Davender did a tremendous job shutting him down. We (Davender) got great help on defense the guards did from our inside people. I think that our defense really created a lot of problems tonight for them. That's what we wanted to go out and do.
(About how important it was to win two ballgames this weekend)
Harden: I think it was very important for our confidence. We all know that we didn't play very well out at Kansas.
Following are East Carolina's coach Charlie Harrison's postgame comments after the Pirates were defeated by Kentucky:
Question: Your comments on the game?
Harrison: We missed some easy shots and this led to some easy shots for them. And they really pounded the offensive boards. I think this was the big difference in the second half. Their defense took its toll. Them made it difficult for us to run our offense. It is a very fine defensive team. Their half-court defensive scheme is awfully good. We did a good job of defensing Kentucky in the first half. We thought we might be able to lay off Blackmon but he was hitting. He is a very good player, or he wouldn't be here.
