Vandy's Donnelly named SEC Freshman of the Year
Kurt Johnson was UK's candidate
Vanderbilt safety Chris Donnelly, recently named Southeastern Conference Freshman Football Player of the Year, was recognized Saturday with a striking trophy of original design.

The presentation was made at the annual football banquet of the Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Quarterback Club, a master trophy to the SEC Office for permanent display, and a personal one to the Donnelly.
Donnelly was chosen from players nominated from each of the 10 SEC schools by a committee of 10 sports writers: Charles Hollis, Mike Marshall, Bill King, Tommy O'Toole. John Clay (Lexington Herald-Leader), Bruce Hunter, Don Whitten, Rusty Hampton, Jimmy Hyams and Larry Woody.
A native of Germantown. Tenn., Donnelly was a substitute in Vanderbilt's first game of the season and won the starting position for the remainder of the season. He made 70 tackles overall, 40 of them solo, intercepting seven passesthree of them in one game, ty-
ing the SEC recordand broke up 14 others for a Vanderbilt record.
All the nominees were true freshmen, both academically and in football partication. Criteria for nomination includes unusual progress in classroom work, leadership of other freshmen on the practice field or in varsity games. The other nominees were:

The players, along with Donnelly, his family, his college coach and his high school coach, were guests of the Lawrenceburg QB Club at the banquet. Steve Cone is president and vice president Sam Thompson is chairman of the banquet committee.
Kurt Johnson (right), flanker and super kick return specialist, was UK's nominee for SEC Freshman of the Year.
