Ole Miss held leads for most of the first part of each half, but lost control of the game down the stretch and fell to Kentucky 61-58 in Oxford. The 'Cats could not contain Carlos Clark, but Mississippi could not stop Melvin Turpin or Kenny Walker, and that proved to be their undoing. Turpin scored 23 points and Walker added 17 to go along with a team-high nine rebounds. Clark scored 26 points to lead all scorers. The win was UK's eighth in a row.
?Melvin Turpin has been selected to the three-state All-District 7 Team. The team is comprised of Division I players from the states of Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. Senior guard Dirk Minniefield was named to the second team.
*For the second straight year, Kentucky finished regular-season play by being handed it's worst loss of the season at Tiger Den in Baton Rouge, this time by a count of 74-60.
Both teams came in hot, with LSU having won seven of nine and four in a row, and Kentucky riding an eight-game winning streak. LSU came out strong early, making the Wildcats look as though they wanted to get the game over in a hurry and head back to Lexington. LSU outscored the 'Cats 16-2 and it was not unitl the 8:20 mark in the first half that Kentucky could break into double figures. Kentucky was down 43-32 at the half. At the start of the second half, the Tigers picked up by jumping out to a 13-point lead and never let Kentucky get any closer than 10 the rest of the way. Howard "High C" Carter, playing his last game in front of the home folks, led all scorers with 23 points. Teammate Leonard Mitchell pitched in with 20. Jim Master led Kentucky with 19 points.

?Kentucky center Sam Bowie blocked a 10-foot baseline jumper by LSU's Howard Carter in the game's final seconds as the Wildcats downed the visiting Tigers 73-71 in a classic confrontation viewed by a national TV audience and a Rupp Arena record crowd of 24,011. On paper, the game meant little since LSU had already wrapped up the SEC crown. But it was a pride contest for Kentucky as LSU was threatening to become the first club in 25 years to go through SEC play undefeated. The Tigers entered the game riding the nation's longest winning streak26 gamesand was ranked second in the country. The win gave Kentucky a 22^ record for the year. UK also made ammends for an 81-67 setback at Baton Rouge earlier in the year. With the help of a roaring crowd from beginning to end, Kentucky never trailed during the game. Carter's final miss was one of three chances LSU had to tie the score during the game. Four WildcatsBowie, Dirk Minniefield, Melvin Turpin and Chuck Verderberscored 11 points each, and Tiger coach Dale Brown said that was the difference in the game. Carter finished with a game-high 24.
?Because they were able to sink 27 of 39 shots for a season-high shooting percentage of 69.2 percent, the Kentucky Wildcats were able to escape Starkville with a 78-74 win over a stubborn Mississippi State team. UK never trailed but State did manage to tie the score in the second half and forced the 'Cats to hit some key free throws down the stretch. Dirk Minniefield paced UK with 20 points, while Sam Bowie added 18 points and Charles Hurt pitched in with 16. Jeff Malone led State with 22 points.
?The SEC basketball tournament will begin this coming week in Birmingham. The bottom four teams will play Wednesday when Vandy meets Mississippi State and Florida takes on Auburn. On Thursday, Tennessee plays Mississippi and Alabama plays Georgia. Kentucky and LSU will also play Thursday, taking on the winners of the first two games.

?Kentucky football coach Fran Curci and his staff traveled north and south last week, and they inked 26 high school prospects to national letters-of-intent to play football at UK. Heading UK's out-of-state signees are Greg Wimberly from the junior college ranks, Steve Willis, UK's first ever signee out of Moeller High School, and Ty Richmond, a defensive back from Texas. Among the list are nine in-state players, including Eddie Simmons, Lawrence "Choo Choo" Lee, Kerry Baird and Ron Knott.
?Kyle Macy sank a 22-foot jumper just before the horn sounded as Kentucky defeated LSU 76-74 in Baton Rouge, giving the 'Cats their 32nd Southeastern Conference championship. The game went into overtime when UK lost an eight-point lead, largely because the 'Cats were unable to hit some crucial foul shots. LSU had a chance to win the game in regulation but missed a last-second shot. UK then failed to score on the first possession of overtime and LSU went into a stall with 4:20 left. However, with :27 remaining in the game, a jump ball was called between Greg Cook and UK's Sam Bowie. UK controlled the ball and called for a timeout, where the
drew up a play to set a double screen for Macy's game-winning shot. UK's Fred Cowan and LSU's Ethan Martin had exceptional games. Cowan hit 12 of 18 shots, scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Martin missed just three of 15 shots and scored 29 points. UK also got 16 points from Bowie and 11 each from Macy and LaVon Williams.
?More than 8,000 fans, among them Lt. Gov. Martha Layne Collins and former Gov. Happy Chandler, were on hand at Memorial Coliseum to greet the UK basketball team after their 76-74 triumph over LSU whjch gave UK the SEC regular-season crown. Collins read a proclamation which declared Feb. 25 as "University of Kentucky Wildcat Day."

?Although seven conference losses have all but eliminated UK from an NCAA berth, the National Invitational Tournament says it is interested in the 'Cats, but it may be necessary that they win their final four games. UK is presently 12-10 on the season.
?In a game that was closer than the final 94-87 margin, UK downed Mississippi in Oxford. Jack Givens led the 'Cats with 30 points and 12 rebounds while Mike Phillips scored 24 points and hauled in 11 rebounds. UK guards Reggie Warford and Larry Johnson each chipped in with 12 points. Eugene Harris led the Rebels with 29 points. UK raised its SEC record to 8-7 while Ole Miss lost for the 20th time in the last 21 meetings.

UK by a score of 71-69. It was the fourth loss in a row by Kentucky.
?In the season finale, Kentucky defeated Mississippi State 108-69, saving the 'Cats from being the first team since 1926-27 to end the year with a losing record. Kevin Grevey led Kentucky with 25 points, and Ronnie Lyons, playing for the last time in a Kentucky uniform, scored 16. Kentucky finished the year 13-13.

?Despite the 103-85 final score, Kentucky got quite a scare from Auburn, but held on for the win and the SEC tide. Coach Joel Eaves' squad gave the 'Cats all they wanted and actually led for much of the second half. UK didn't take the lead for good until 8:50 remained and couldn't get a working margin until the final two minutes. Vernon Hatton came off the bench to lead the 'Cats with 24 points. Gerry Calvert and John Crigler scored 21 points apiece while Johnny Cox added 20. It reportedly is the first time four Wildcats have scored 20 points or more in the same contest. UK is now 11-2 in the league and 21-4 overall.
?UK is third in the AP poll behind North Carolina and Kansas.
?Adolph Rupp was named the SEC Coach of the Year by the Atlanta Journal. UK's Johnny Cox made All-SEC along with Joe Gibbon, Bailey Howell, Al Rochelle and Jim Ashmore. Ed Beck and Gerry Calvert were named to the all-defensive team.
?UK wound up the regular season up the regular season with a 93-75 win over Tennessee, giving the 'Cats a 22-4 record. The teams played on almost terms until the final seven minutes. Gerry Calvert and John Crigler each scored 20 points while Vernon Hatton added 17. Ed Beck scored 16 points' and grabbed 13 rebounds. Hermann Thompson led Tennessee with 25 points.
