             Scope and Contents note 
             The Rober Graves papers consist of correspondence between Victor Hammer and Robert Graves and a letter from Victor Hammer to Carolyn Reading all concerning translating passages from Hesiod's works. Included in the correspondence are several annotated passages from Hesiod's Theogony. Additionally, the collection contains several newspaper clippings pertaining to the deaths of Robert Graves and Laura Riding Jackson.

             Biographical note 
             Robert Graves (1895-1985) was a renowned English poet, translator and novelist, whose major works include 
                 Goodbye to All That , 
                 I, Claudius , and 
                 Claudius and God . Graves fought as an infantry captain in France during World War One. Following the war he married, Nancy Nicholson, with whom he had a turbulent marriage that produced four children. He had a long relationship with American poet Laura Riding Jackson in the 1920s and 1930s. Eventually, he permanently settled in Majorca and married Beryl Hodge in 1950. 
             Victor Karl Hammer (1882-1967) was an Austrian-born American painter, sculptor, printer, and typographer. After fleeing Nazi Austria in 1939, Victor Hammer eventually settled in Lexington, Kentucky, where he was the artist in residence at Transylvania University. He married to Carolyn Reading in 1955. Carolyn Reading Hammer was the University of Kentucky's Curator of Rare Books and the founder of the King Library Press.
