Anxiously Awaiting
Dear Sir:
I am sending in for a subscription renewal of your fine sports magazine of the UK activities. I am always anxiously awaiting the next issue. You cover so well the real interesting things pertaining to sports at UK. I know a lot of disgruntled fans use The Cats Pause to air out their unhapp-iness with the coaching staff and other things connected with sports but I think we should be delighted with the records we have achieved and of the fact that our basketball teams are always near or on the top of the list and now our football program is also going in the right direction.
Fans should realize that there are so many major schools in this country that have the same goal in mind - to have the best players and to be on top that it is difficult to be #1 or ever near #1 every year. Not only do you have to 'have goocl players but you also need a lot of good breaks to win. The ball doesn't always bounce your way.
Thanks for your fine paper. I am one of your most appreciative subscribers.
Sincerely,
Earle C. Morris 523 Carolyne St Tampa, Florida 33617
Family Devotion
Dear Sir:
Just a note to let you know we enjoy The Cats' Pause very much. I have been a Wildcat fan ever since I can remember. You see, I am also a Kentuckian. I was born and raised in Martin County. I married and moved to Ohio. That was thirty-one years ago.
My husband, our son and his wife and I was at the tournament last December. We enjoyed it very much. The only regret I had was I didn't get to meet Joe B. Hall and the players.
We listen to the games on the radio and we watch them when they are on television.
We'll be rooting for U.K. h the way.
Sincerely Virginia Green Columbus, Ohio
In Agreement
Dear Sir:
I applaud you for your opening comments in today's (Nov. 24) Cats' Pause. After so many years of
listening to the Cats on radio or traveling to Lexington, only to have another 3-8 season, my dedication to Kentucky football has finally been rewarded. I have surmised from your comments today and recently that the local fans and students are not as supportive of this team as we would expect. Possibly, Central Kentuckians expect entertainment from Coach Claiborne and his players instead of the real reason for athletics. Maybe Lexington will never be a real football town and believe me, I know what real football fans are.
For purposes of my support as a displaced Kentuckian in Big Ten country, I compliment Coach Claiborne and the entire team for a great season, win or lose today.
I have complete confidence in Kentucky's chances against Wisconsin in the Hall of Fame bowl.
Thank you for your objective comments.
Sincerely
John W. Rees Revnoldsburg. Ohio
UK And Brickie Fan
Dear Sir:
I am enclosing a check to renew my subscription to the finest basketball magazine anywhere. Being a native Kentuckian and living in Indiana. I look forward each week to receiving TCP.
I have always been a Kentucky fan and always will be. I am also a "Hobart Brickie" fan. Our high school is going to the "Hoosier Dome" this Saturday to play in the Indiana State 4A championship game. This is the fourth time in 6 years we have reached the final game. This is also the first state final game being played in the "Hoosier Dome." We have a 49-game regular season winning streak going and I haven't lost a football game at home since 1977. The amazing thing about the whole deal is that we only have 900 students and play schools 2 to 3 times larger than we are. Next year we will be forced to drop to a lower class.
Thank you for TCP and good luck "Wildcats" and "Brickies."
Sincerely Robert D. Sliger Hobart, Indiana
Proud Of Claiborne
Dear Sir:
I want to express my thanks to you and your staff for the fine coverage of Kentucky sports.
A tip of the cap to Jerry Claiborne and his fine staff and players. He has turned the program around and given
the UK fans something to be proud of. I'm sure their success will continue against Wisconsin and for many years to come.
Although the high expectations aren't as rampant as in years past, I think Joe Hall's team will prove to be a pleasant surprise by season's end. We may not win all the games we would like but I am confident this team will do well 'On the Road to Lexington.'
Best wishes to UK in all endeavors.
Sincerely Allyn Freibert Louisville, Ky.
S.C. Fan Praises Pause
Dear Sir:
I felt I had to write to let you know how much I enjoy The Cats' Pause. Since my company transferred me to Columbia, S.C. two years ago, I felt a need to subscribe to The Cats Pause to keep up with UK. (Thanks to my friend in Lexington - Gene Wheeler). I was born in Russellville, Kentucky.
I am depending on The Cats' Pause to let me know how to order Bowl tickets. Hopefully the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.
We hear a lot about S.C. Gamecocks in Columbis, but my wife and I will always say U.K. #1. We are proud of the Wildcats.
Best Regards, Charles Maxwell Columbia, S.C.
Thanking J. C.
Dear Sir:
I don't know J.C. Dumas and I have never even seen the man, to the best of my knowledge. But I want to bring to the attention of the people who read The Cats' Pause, about two articles this man wrote and try to give him some of the recognition I think he deserves.
I am referring to two articles he wrote in The Cats' Pause. One, a few weeks ago and the other in the Nov. 10th issue. The one about Eric Young was very special to me as I have worked with Eric's father for many years. For the ones who don't remember, Eric was the 16-year old boy that died during a football game at Apollo High School here in Owens-boro. Eric wanted to play football so bad but of course it was impossible on account of the heart condition he had all his life. The coach at Apollo did such a wonderful thing for him by letting him be the team manager so he could be with the team at all the games. This meant more to Eric than any single thing in his life.
The second article I am referring to is the one about Kathleen Beumel. I
don't know Kathleen or her family but I feel like I do because it seemed like every time I would pick up the paper there would be an article about her winning a race and also a picture of her with that look of determination and a winner. Kathleen is in the biggest battle of her life right now but I believe she will again be a winner because she is such a competitor. My heart bleeds for her and her family.
After reading these two articles, I truly believe that The Cats' Pause has a Kentucky thoroughbred in J.C. Dumas. He could so easily use his space to write about some seven footer that Kentucky is recruiting and probably be more popular with the readers but I really believe this man wrote these two articles from the bottom of his heart. After I read the article on Eric, I gave it to his father to read. And J.C, if you could have sat there and seen the expression on his father's face as he read your column I am sure you would be rewarded for the rest of your life.
So sometimes when you CP. readers get to thinking there is nobody that cares anymore, just dig up these back issues and read these two articles by J.C. Dumas. I think you will have to agree. J.C. Dumas really cares.
My hats off to you, Oscar Combs, for having people like this on your staff. You should be very proud.
Sincerely Russell F. Adams Philpot, Ky.
A Long Way From UK
Dear Sir:
Thank you for another excellent year of UK and statewide sports coverage. Please renew my subscription to your fine publication. Being stationed in Rota Spain with the U.S. Navy, it can be difficult keeping up with the latest sports happenings in the Bluegrass. Thanks to The Cats' Pause, I have no problem at all. Many of my friends also find the paper very interesting and entertaining, especially your coverage of the SEC.
I especially was pleased with the Sept. 15 issue which included Larry Vaught's article on Tom Wilkens, UK's fine defensive tackle and a product of my alma mater, Russellville High School. Guys like Tom have helped build Ken Barrett's Panthers into one of the best high school programs in the state and his recognition is well-deserved.
Good luck to Tom and his teammates for the remainder of the season and I look equally forward to the approaching hoop season. Go Cats!
Sincerely
Donald K. Menser Rota, Spain
