UK Cheerleaders Hawaii-Bound
WRAPPING UP THE YEAR. The UK cheerleading squad will go to Hawaii this month for the second straight year to compete in the national cheerleading championships. Adviser T. Lynn Williamson will lead the trip to Honolulu for the Dec. 15-21 competition. Ten squads from around the nation won the right to compete . . .Dr. and Mrs. Alfred David G. Arthurs were special guests at a 20th anniversary celebration for the UK Donovan Scholars Program. He earned a Ph.D. degree from UK at age 67 in the Donovan program which offers free tuition to people over 65 years of age. .

.Those intricate Wildcat Marching Band formations that you will see at the Hall of fame Bowl are being done by computer. J. Steven Moore, assistant director of bands, and Allen Goodwin, assistant professor of Music, have developed a software package called "Halftime," which is faster than the old hand method. . .Give the travel award for 1984 to Elizabeth Ray, a 1964 UK alumnus, who travels 150 miles from Reno, Nev., to UK alumni club meetings in San Francisco. . .Former Kentucky Gov. A.B. (Happy) Chandler and his wife, Mildred, celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary at a reception at the UK College of Dentistry. Dental school dean Merrill W. Packer did the cake. He's an expert at cake decorating, and this one for the Chandlers took 40 hours to complete. . .Athletic director Cliff Hagan is proud of his Center for Academic and Tutorial Services (CATS, of course) that is helping athletes with their school work. It's funded from donations, Hagan says. It's run by assistant athletic director Bob Bradley who says it probably is the only one of its kind in the nation. This one is available any time of the day for academic counseling or simply a place to study. . .Speaking of Cliff Hagan, he's become a grandfather again for the second time with a third due most any time. Both girls. . UK is gearing up for the NCAA basketball finals in Lexington. A committee headed by UK vice president Ray Hornback will be planning many activities on the campus for the out-of-town visitors. . .And last year's campus newspaper, the Kentucky Kernel, was named among the top 10 percent of the nation's collegiate publications by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. UK senior journalism major Andrew Oppmann of Hopkinsville was editor of the paper last year.
OLD STUFF. The oldest reptilian fossil in the world resides right at the
University of Kentucky. Tracks made by a reptile 310 million years ago were preserved in a sandstone slab found in McCreary County and turned over to the Kentucky Geological Survey at UK. Announcement of the discovery by state geologist Donald C. Haney made headlines in the scientific world.
NEW STUFF. A new book on Kentucky basketball, this one by a history professor at UK who is a great fan of the Wildcats. He is Bert Nelli, and his book - "The Winning Tradition: A History of Kentucky Wildcat Basketball" -- has just been published by the University Press of Kentucky. It costs $19.50.
HIGH HONORS. A University of Kentucky professor delivered the prestigious Alexander Lectures at the University of Toronto this year. The lectures were another achievement in the glittering academic career of Guy Davenport, UK professor of English. Davenport, a prolific writer and author of 27 books, stands tall internationally in his field of arts and letters. Among his many other honors, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Prize in 1981.
Another UK professor was honored recently by being knighted. Professor John Keller was dubbed a knight of the Order de Isabel la Catolica by the king of Spain in recognition of his long and outstanding work in furthering the understanding of Spanish culture through his research and writings. He has been a professor of Spanish at UK since 1967.
CAMPUS CALENDAR. Finals week hits the students just before Christmas. That's whens the library lights glow long into the night. Dec. 20 is the last day of final exams. School doesn't start again until Jan. 16. Don't forget if you're visiting Lexington that the entire University is closed the week between Christmas and New Year's. Doesn't matter. Most everyone will be in Birmingham anyway.
ARTS FLOURISHING. If you do visit the campus, the Art Museum is a great place to browse among interesting exhibits and increasing permanent works. Museum hours are noon to 5 p.m. every day except Mondays and University holidays. Docents, led by Mrs. Kerry Zack, will give you a tour each Sunday at 2 p.m. Museum director Bill Hennessey says visitors continue to increase, now averaging 150 each weekday and 450 on Sundays.
Latest acquisition is a beautiful 1600 oil painting by Peter Lely of Great Britain, donated by UK alumnus John Proffitt and his wife of Washington, D.C., originally of Louisville. The painting was given in honor of Helen King, the retired UK alumni director after whom UK's Alumni House is
named. _ -t-^-H-lI
RALPH HACKER, PLEASE NOTE. A favorite story of Helen King's is the time Don McNeill of WHAS radio in Louisville, later the host of the radio "Breakfast Club," broadcast the UK-Alabama football game on a national network. That was many years ago, probably around 1919, Mrs. King remembers, but she'll never forget it. She was the color commentator.
QUOTABLE QUOTE. ". . .UK is an emerging national leader in the computer and engineering sciences. . .," Franklin Julian, regional vice president of AT&T on the occasion of his company's gift of $1.1 million worth of computer equipment to the engineering school and computer science department.
