ONE YEAR AGO
*For the first time in over three decades Kentucky and Louisville met in a regular season basketball game and the Cats pulled out all stops to post a 65-44 win over the Cardinals at Rupp Arena. Jim Master and Melvin Turpin led the point parade with 19 and 16 points respectively, but the big news was the return of Sam Bowie who hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds in his first action in more than two years after recovering from a leg injury.
*Coaches of the SEC continued to disagree on where the tournament should be held each year, at a neutral site or on a college campus. The recent issue was raised because Vanderbilt had   been   selected   for   the 1984
tournament. Some coaches preferred it being played at Birmingham. The tourney committee, however, voted to play the 1985 event back in Birmingham.
*Dr. Charles Scott of the University of Alabama was selected to Become the new athletics director at Mississippi State University, replacing the retiring Carl Maddox.
FIVE YEARS AGO
"Kentucky rolled to a convincing three-game sweep in Alaska with wins over Bradley, Alaska and Iona to capture the championship of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage. The Cats were led by All-American Kyle Macy and Sam Bowie.
"Kentucky's swim team got off to a fast start by defeating the Cincinnati Bearcats 61-52, the first time since 1970 the Cats had defeated the highly
regarded Bearcats. Especially impressive for the Cats were Chad Knutson, Doug Evans, Mark Gribble and David Oliver who set a new UK dual record in the freestyle relay event.
*In an exclusive interview with The Cats' Pause, Michigan State head coach Judd Heathcote, whose Spartans had won the NCAA title last March, said one of the first things that happens to a national champion is they are automatically ranked in the next season's pre-season top twenty, regardless of how good they are.

All-American candidate Kevin Grevey led the Cats with 32 points. Freshman James Lee came off the bench to tally 11.
"Senior forward Bob Guyette came to the rescue as Kentucky scored an 80-70 win over Miami of Ohio in a game played in Oxford. The game was closer than the score would indicate. UK fell behind early when Miami reeled off the game's first ten points. UK trailed 67-65 with five minutes left. Guyette chipped in 17 points, many coming at crucial times.

"It was expected to be a battle of power when Kansas visited Memorial Coliseum but the Wildcats romped 118-85 behind Dan Issel's 29 points and 12 rebounds.
"UK linebacker Joe Federspial was named to the Associated Press All-Southeastern Sophomore team.
"In its first road trip of the year, Kentucky held off a late rally by seventh-ranked North Carolina to down the Tar Heels 94-87. Before 11,000 frantic fans, the host team had sliced UK's 17-point margin to three with two minutes left. Dan Issel scored 41 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for UK. Mike Pratt added 27 points and 16 rebounds. Charlie Scott paced North Carolina with 29 points.
"Pratt and Issel are just tremendous, '' said Tar Heel coach Dean Smith. "This is the best defensive team I've seen at UK."
