The 1982 UKIT
The 1982 University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament features three teams that made postseason tournaments a year ago and all three teams return most of the players from last year's squads.
The odds-on favorite is tourney host Kentucky, undefeated in five starts and ranked No. 2 in the country below Virginia.
There are, however, legitimate contenders to UK's crown. Rutgers also brings a stainless 5-0 worksheet into tonight's first round game with 3-3 Tulane. Both schools went to the National Invitation Tournament last season and the Green Wave advanced to the third round.
Rutgers is a very capable team. The Scarlet Knights defeated
UCLA last year at the Meadow-lands and the top six scorers from last season are back. Coach Tom Young's team from New Brunswick, N. J., will contend for the Atlantic 10 Conference title with the likes of 6-9 senior Roy Hinson at center and 6-6 Kevin Black at forward. Young realizes the tourney will be a challenge.
"Tulane is tough as we all know from their game with North Carolina earlier, and UK may just have the best team in the country," says Young. "Duquesne, of course, is in our conference and we have a 5-5 series record with them."
Tulane, under second-year coach Ned Fowier, is coming off a 19-9 season in which it defeated Memphis State during the reg-

ular season and downed LSU and Nevada-Las Vegas in the NIT. The Greenies also placed second in the rugged Metro Conference.
As Young mentioned, the Green Wave carried North Carolina to three overtimes before losing by two at Chapel Hill in November.
Like Rutgers, Tulane has an outstanding man in the pivot in 6-9 John Williams, averaging 17 points per game. Williams versus Hinson should be a tasty matchup.
Kentucky's first round opponent is Duquesne, also a member of the Atlantic 10. The Dukes are rebuilding under new coach Jim Satalin. Though only 36, Satalin already has nine years of head coaching experience under his belt as the successful mentor at St. Bonaventure.
