The collection includes legal and financial documents concerned with the settlement of an estate involving land in Kentucky acquired through the Transylvania Company. John Luttrell of Orange County, North Carolina, left most of his estate to his wife Susannah, who after Luttress' death, married John Umstead. The papers, involving the Umstead's land in Kentucky, which was disputed by John Tanner, include bonds, deeds, Transylvania Company land grants and parts of legal cases and supporting evidence, including wills, summons complaints and depositions.
