The Edna Talbot Whitley scrapbooks contain programs from concerts held in the central Kentucky area, predominantly Lexington.
Edna Talbott Whitley was born in 1891 in Paris, Kentucky to Robert C. Talbott, a lawyer, and Sallie Scott Grimes. Edna married Wade Hampton Whitley on June 10, 1909. Edna became a Kentucky historian and published works including Kentucky Ante-Bellum Portraiture in 1956, George Berk an Eighteenth Century Painter, and in 1969 she compiled a list of cabinetmakers in Kentucky.
The Edna Talbot Whitley scrapbooks contain programs from concerts held in the central Kentucky area, predominantly Lexington. The collection contains three scrapbooks of programs representing concerts given by major artists as well as local performers. Along with Lexington concert programs are others from Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Chautauqua, N.Y., and Paris, Ky. Among the well-known performers to appear in these concerts are Pablo Casals, Percy Grainger, Jascha Heifetz, Vladimir Horowitz, Fritz Kreisler, John McCormack, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Fritz Reiner and John Philip Sousa. Major symphony orchestras represented are the Cincinnati Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Minneapolis Symphony and the New York Symphony. Some ballet and opera programs are included, as well as a few concert reviews.
