Short was born in Woodford Co, Ky, and attended the Joshua Fry School in Mercer County, Ky, before receiving a degree from Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. After studying medicine and botany at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Short began practicing medicine, first in Lexington and then in Hopkinsville, Ky. In 1865, Dr. Short accepted the professorship of Materia Medicine at Transylvania University. He served there until 1838 when he accepted a similar position at Louisville Medical Institute (which became the University of Louisville in 1849). In 1849 Dr. Short retired from active teaching and continued his botanical studies.The papers consist of drafts of letters by Charles Wilkins Short and notes taken by him on a trip down the Ohio River. The notes (1VF61M12), in memoranda form, relate to a botanical excursion down the Ohio River, March- April 1845. The drafts of letters (1VF65M173) deal with his resignation at both Transylvania University and the University of Louisville.
